Facebook could disappear in 3 years

Recently Princeton's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering released a paper that makes the claim that Facebook could disappear within 3 years. They state they could lose 80 percent of their users by 2017.

I don't know if that it would be correct that they would go away completely worldwide, but my question is this...

Princeton wrote the paper on 17 January. On 23 January Facebook responded with a research that concludes that Princeton won't have any students in 2021. https://www.facebook.com/notes/mike-...51947421191849
Of course the research Facebook did was just a response to the Princeton article.

I don't think Facebook will disappear that fast. Maybe in a few decades. But not in 3 years.
Almost everyone uses Facebook. All websites, apps, devices... have a Facebook integration.

I don't think facebook is gonna be too cool with younger people - its more for their saddo parents. Twitter on the other hand seems to be booming.

I've actually read the paper. The model is flawed, the choice of proxy is wrong, the result isn't repeated or challenged, there is no control result, making this bad science. Remove the fancy words and you're left with a method a schoolboy would use to prove something.

But I still agree with the results.

I think there will certainly be a tailing off, with younger users leading the way. However, Facebook is big enough and has the cash to spend to morph into something else that's more appealing. The group will also likely branch into many different areas of technology, much like Google are doing, so if one branch fails the whole company isn't affected.

I recall seeing in articles in recent months that new user numbers are down a bit (which kinda makes sense now that they are 10) and that they are also losing current users through normal attrition as well as privacy concerns.

I could go on a rant on my feelings about Facebook as well as Google+ they seem like necessary evils for marketing purposes but it would not bother me one bit if Facebook ceased to exist. I get kind of annoyed by posts from people about what they did, what they ate and what they are going to do.

I've started using Linkedin a couple of days ago. What a breath of fresh air. Being connected to people for a purpose, without spam.

The younger generation will control what sites are visited and they seem to have shorter and shorter attention spans. They seem to be already leaving facebook

I find facebook brilliant for certain things. I'm using four groups to :

- organise and running an amateur football team - matches, trainings, events
- communicate with our site writers and news contributors all around the globe.
- run a monthly "lunch club" for fellow entrepreneurs.
- host a goonersguide sounding board with bet tips, and videos etc.

To be honest I have found it easy to do - people seem to find it easy to access and comment on - and it is a great way to stay in touch with a range of different people who might be living across the street, in the next town, or halfway around the world.

I cannot do any of that with Twitter, Linked-In and/or Forums, and while I might be able to set up a blog to manage it - this central point means that people seem to be more likely to check in 2-3 times a week and actually participate - even if it is just a "like" or a short comment.

Perhaps the reason I like facebook is that I am NOT very social? I mean I prefer to quickly scan what's going on - or post a note - without having to meet up with everyone ALL the time or get on the phone. Perhaps it's a "not so social" network - and that's what I like?

It's now integrated well to deeply with everything (sign up via Facebook for instance) and their latest mobile move was just amazing. Facebook now is one of the best mobile app (except for their latest version of the messenger which makes me upset by displaying the same info all the time), when it was one of the worse a year ago.

The strength of Facebook is that they can still evolve, buy new concepts, integrate them (Instagram!), and gain users this way. They may lose some, but they may also find ways to make the one using it more engaged. More engagement = more money. So.. I'm not so convinced by this study. But looking forward to seeing the future of social media!

Facebook is going to disappear yes it will down next generation wants some more stylish and friendly Facebook needs to change with time
many people comes in Facebook for just entertainment and information because they don't find Google is entertainer

I believe facebook will disappear when someone launch a P2P social network, based on Tor perhaps, with encrypted private data and posts, which will be stored on local HDD. Without stupid ads etc.

What the.. haha, I read too much of the comments. I don't think FB will cease to exist in the next few years. There have to be a fitting replacement first, but I just don't believe that anyone can compare to them if not they have a REAL good idea how to promote it.

I think if they conduct some changes on fitting the requirements of the new generation, they will stay in business for longer time. Plus, we are not that old and not planning on quitting it

I think it will implode with restrictions and snooping that are already growing. Also note that 70% of the users are most likely fake or one person has multiple identities. Myspace will always be the biggest web wonder right?

Facebook loses millions of users every month. Especially youngsters seem to leave, because their parents and grandparents are using it too

In general online networks seem to have a lifecycle of around 10-12 years. Many users thought MySpace would stay forever as well....
