Line Feeds

This may be a stupid (simplistic) question, but I am thinking about writing a site that would need the latest lines on every game. I saw an XML feed a few months back which would fit my needs, but I also need a commercial feed.

Where do you all get your line data from? What's the cost? How easy is it for your web applications to consume? The one I saw had a master feed which then enabled the software to locate feeds for each sport and week individually. Would love something similar.

Look up free RSS news/sports/etc feeds. As long as you don't charge to see the stats there is no problem.

This will make the news reader for your web site and then you can add any feed you like.

Feeds can be very expensive... hundreds - or even thousands of dollars per month.

I've been doing this for many years using free stuff - and the basic line information is typically offered at many of the better sports aff programs. HOWEVER, each of these feeds is a different format and as such, requires a custom solution to do what you want. This is not an RSS feed which is a standardized XML output, typically for news articles.

I have been converting rss feeds from sports networks easily and it doesn't cost thousands of dollars

Thanks for the great info Jimmie, and the link to the RSS reader.

I am a programmer by trade, so custom writing XML readers isn't a problem for me, I was more concerned with legality and if any one has a stable source which is easy to consume via code.

Hope you stick around. Not sure why your hot over matted's reply (thanks matted). I read his reply as simply warning me about the requirement of custom programing.

I started my business on less than a shoe string. You don't need mega bucks to make things work. If you want syndicated feeds for $10,000 a minute, fine but there are simple (LEGAL) and effective ways for regular people without a mega budget to construct and present an acceptable site to perspective gamblers.

Some guy sitting in a trailer park in Georgia doesn't really care about how much I spent on my information services, he just wants a site he feels comfortable with and can spend his money.

Commercial use means you cannot charge for the service. Displaying feeds on a commercial/ad free website is legal. I just get pissed when people make this business more difficult and seemingly complicated than it is.
