We received this mail today about a link removal and we would like to know your thoughts, it´s new on me as most of us spend the day trying to get some half decent backlinks!

I think they got hit by an "unnatural link profile" penalty or by something related to "follow ads" (banners and hrefs without rel="nofollow").

Nothing suspicious, just add a rel="nofollow" on your outgoing links.

Can I ask?
Who asked you to remove the link is the prop of the banner on top of your home?
It's a href without "nofollow". Just add it

No-we have a directory and luxbet was amongst the bookmakers that we had listed----nothing more than that!

The person who wrote us was Scott Majors from atomicsearch!

We just found it weird,it was nothing more than a link!

AtomicSearch is a Digital Marketing agency... right?
Probably they have "luxbet" as client and their site was hit by a "strange animal" (see Penguin) related penalty.

My personal advice, good not only for your outgoing links but also for you: add a rel="nofollow" to all your outgoing links in your directory

If it is send from an other company than the domain they want to remove maybe you should ask for some verification. It could be a competitor who tries to get the competition weaker.

But most of the time it will be the owner of the website or a company working for him. Just remove the link if they ask you to remove it. Otherwise they will add your link to the disavow file. There is no prove that it is bad to be in a disavow file, but I would prefer to stay out of disavow files. You never know what Google does or will do with the information.

What this looks to me is that they 'or their client's site' has been hit with a 'unnatural links email' from Google, and before they try to disavow links, they (are actually) approaching all sites from which they can see a link back from. Since there are probably quite a few, they have automated the process. Not implying your site is a scam at all, they just want to get rid of all their backlinks, so they asked you too. Do them a favor, remove the link. Your site won't be less over it, and you will help them in their request.

I have had to do a 'google links removal request' and it is no joke. It took me months to get that site back indexed. Best you can do, if you want to help them, is to actually remove the link. Your site, or the quality of it, has nothing to do with it.
