MSN Messenger Forcing us to merge with Skype?

MSN history will be saved on your computer somewhere..
On my machine they are saved in Documents\My Received Files\renee(series of numbers)\History.
If you still have msn installed you should be able to go to Options and click History to see where they are saved.

From memory they are saved in an xml file so if you open them in IE you'll need to be a bit patient trying to read them.

Anyway Skype is better , the only thing they don't have is sending offline messages but in the future they will have that's for sure.I think that live messenger and skype want to colaborate that's all.

Considering that Skype runs a P2P network and servers cost lots of money, I doubt Skype will ever have offline message system. It's just not profitable from $$$ point of view and MS is all about the money.

I do agree with you. I have worked with skype for over 2 years and I find it so much better.

I just received a message for MS. Apparently you don't even have to transfer you contacts:

" Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips"

mmmh but how come my MSN is still running? I use it to communicate mostly with the people at work, not with affiliates, but still running fine for me...

Although apparently once you do merge them you can no longer contact the people still using msn. So hopefully everyone has the same idea.

I don't understand how it is working, I have a Skype account and an Msn account, I have had the messages about merging my accounts. However, if I sign in with my MSN account, I only see the same contacts as I do on my normal Skype account. So I fail to see the benefit right now to be honest!

I agree, Skype is by far the better of the two. I mean, especially as an affiliate. Its main benefit is by far the fact that you can view previous history of conversations, which can be very useful when striking deals or asking AM something! Whereas with MSN, once you close the window the conversation is lost. So Skype was always the thumbs up from me. Also, speaking from personal experience, I noticed a heck of a lot of MSN contacts stopped using it once Facebook chat came along!

You can (or could used to at least) set MSN to save logs of your conversation locally. They're a lot more obvious to remember to back up if you're changing or reformatting your PC too as they were by default in My Documents! Skype only stores server side logs for 30 days, so you need to remember to back up your local application data otherwise you'll lose all your logs if something goes wrong with your PC. Fantastic programme aside from not making that more obvious.

You can do that Luke, but it is far more of a faff, as you have to locate the file and then go through it, usually in Notepad, and find the convo. I find it easier personally to just have it there in Skype where it is easily located, and easily synced on say, my iphone too, which isn't possible with locally stored MSN conversations.

I was trying to say that Skype conversations are actually stored locally too, except for the latest 30 days which are also stored server side. They're kept in the C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\Skype folder I believe - so just be careful if ever reformatting or changing PC!

I also find it far easier for the history on MSN. If you have it checked in the options, it saves the history. I save every conversation. You never know when you will need it. Skype makes that harder.

Actually I find the history works easier in skype, it's right there, and you can easily look back a week or more by clicking.

True, but I keep my history on a shared drive in case I'm out of the office or if someone else needs to go through it for me while I'm away. Can't do that with Skype AFAIK. I looked through the settings and there is no option to save it elsewhere or choose where you save the history.

That is a clear reason....that would be a nice feature to add.
