So we just got this email from Rizk Affiliates with the following notice about free spins:


"Due to recent events and changes in rules and regulations in the UK, free spins are no longer allowed to be called free spins. You must now call them "extra spins". This new rule will also be a part of our renewed T&C's, so please ensure that you follow it."


This is the first time I've heard about such a regulation and, if true, this would mean updating a lot of pages!

Trouble is every brand is interpreting this differently which makes it very difficult like you said to implement on to sites.

There was an ad for a well known brand on tv last night in the UK and it very much highlighted the free spins offer.

You should also prepare yourselves for bonuses no longer being bonuses any more. There was talk last year of the UK Treasury implementing a Tax on Free Spins and Bonuses, looks like that is beginning to happen and Casino swill either stop doing them or change the way they offer inducements to players. I am not the expert of UK law, and English is not my native language.


But i think that it is not necessary to forbid every separate word like "free spins", "free bonuses" e.t.c., because this is impossible. This document provide only basic principles, some basic rules. And UK courts and UKGC have a right to interpreting this rules.

So i think, gambling operators worried about Rule 18:

advertisements must be legal and not misleading;

In most cases "Free bonuses" and "Free spins" is not Free in real. So we have big probability, that UKGC or/and UK Court may interpreting such advertising as a violation of Rule 18. This is my point of view.

Some casinos are now using the word "Free" (free spins, free bonus...) only for something you get after registration, without any deposits.

This is very much the case.

We are working through with bet365 - and BOTH parties know their directives are ridiculous - but in their view also mandatory .

Bet365 have given a October 20th deadline to be compliant.

Given what I am seeing out there at the moment, and almost complete lack of action, I foresee a HUGE number of affiliate sites being suspended ... and then the squealing and wailing will be huge from affiliates.

Meanwhile, we have other UK licensed programs carrying on - situation normal - asking for push of new promotions with plenty of FREE offers.


Madness - but there is little choice but to comply.
