I'm going to look at paying for some content for my website particularly in areas that I don't specialise.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what you'd expect to pay for a well written sporting article about 500-1000 words long please?

This can depend heavily on how complex your subject is. For gambling related work it's not easy to just go anywhere for content, ideally you want to be working with specialist writers (ie people who understand the games, betting in general etc). Expect to be paying upwards of $20-30 per article. I wouldn't baulk at paying $100 for the cream, though of course that would be used sparingly.

You can go to Fiverr for writers (for stuff that's less complex/more general), though you'll have to work through a number to find one who's good enough. Average about one in 5 or 10 will cut it (well), 2 or 3 out of ten will be just OK, the rest unusable (or you will have to rewrite it yourself). Can still be a good option if used thoughtfully (and with the benefit of experience).

One other option you could try is offering to publish written content on your site with link. You'll most likely get takers if your site(s) is/are strong enough.

There are good writers an iwriter com. They have reduced the size of the article to 300 words. Iwriter grades their authors in terms of stars, 3 star, 4 star, ext.. You can pay extra for your request to only be seen by 4-5 star authors. It is still hit or miss. Once you find a few writers that are good you can send them requests (depending on if your article is time sensitive)

Yes probably around $20 for a good article.
Been working with Elance for some side projects (not gambling related) and to be honest, anyone around $10 sent some poor quality work i had to re-write. As soon as you pass a level of remuneration, you usually get a level of skills as well. Never a 100% guarantee, but well... Good luck!

$20 will get you grammatically correct on-topic articles nowadays. These have uses, however they are generally pretty boring.

If you want content that really fulfills your business goals, then you'll need to employ someone who has a mix of copy writing skills, topic specific knowledge and the ability to understand things like sales funnels, CTAs, pre-selling etc. They will need to understand your visitors, how they get to your pages and speak to them, engaging with them on the right levels.

People with these skills will generally charge a lot more money. You can get lucky and find a talent at bargain prices, though I have never found anyone above the 'on topic, good grammar, boring content' level at any commercial writing factory type sites.

There are 1000's of sites ranking for big money terms out there in many niches who show their visitors very dry, dull content that is obviously written without passion, insight or even much interest in the topic. Spending just a fraction of the cost of their SEO / PPC / design budgets on genuinely engaging copy could dramatically bump conversion rates... yet the bar of 'quality' for content remains painfully low!

Guess that is just a fancy way of saying 'it depends'...

Noted, but you can get round it (to an extent) by asking for 1) examples of previous work (or just look at the site they're going to want links for/to) and then also making it clear you reserve the right to make judgement and refuse content if it doesn't meet your quality expectations.

Generally - with experience - you can tell what you're likely to get by the way people present themselves in communications.

Interesting post indeed Planet Mark. I'm beginning to see just how important engaging content is actually and your post re-emphasised this for me.

I have a couple of people who write their own personal blogs who would be happy to send me some content but would probably like to post it on their blog too. Would having content that exists elsewhere too be detrimental from an SEO perspective?</SPAN>
