In doing so, they effectively removed all player protection in what looks like an obvious manipulation of the system and a quick cash grab. Also, William Hill making interesting moves.

You're right Gooner. Australian law is pretty nuanced when it comes to this. Licenses are provided at the state and territory levels for sports betting. In-run betting for sports is illegal under Australian law.

Attorney Jamie Nettleton (based in Sydney) does a good job of explaining this in the Internet Gambling Report, which looks at what's legal and illegal in the major jurisdictions around the world.

Yes - it's something to do with "micro-duration" games that are not allowed.

This means that most (all?) casino and poker sites are banned and also in-play sports betting - but not long duration sports events (like football games, tennis games etc).

It was interesting to see Betfair betting exchange work their way through the minefield of Australian licensing, they can offer all the normal pre-match markets for most sports - but the "Australian" wallet cannot bet in-play. However it can place bets at halftime on the result of the second half .... ??

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that this legislation has been heavily influenced by land-based casino studies that have shown that it is the short duration events like one-armed bandits/ slot machines / pokies are the most "addictive" and most like to cause problem gambling .... whether that's true or not ... it seems to be the thinking in Australia right now.

So Australian law is almost the opposite of US - where sports betting is specifically legalised and actively encouraged during the main network telecasts.

Does that mean that horse racing and dog racing is not allowed but say Nascar would be since it "takes longer"?
