    Default Floods in Malta

So it's the topic of this morning here in Malta, as we had a massive storm last night and this got a little crazy so i thought i'd share with you...

Due to the massive amounts of rain, there have been car being swept away and houses and shops flooded.

where abouts was that? I walked in from St Julian's to Msida, and just had to avoid getting soaked by the cars going past...luckily no-one got me!

Apart from that, there was nothing like in those pics on the way in

Would not be surprised if it was in the St Pauls area though it don't look like it, that place floods like its a reservoir

I've just seen this video of the coffins floating down the river. It's a crazy island today.

Don't worry baldidiot : the sun is back out now

Impromptu burial at sea...Thankfully it looked empty!

Does it always rain like it has during autumn here?

I can't remember it being this bad last year at this time, but I do remember Jan/Feb/March there being a lot of thunder and rain, maybe the rain season has started early this year...

Last two years have not been so bad but the winter of 2007/8 was horrendous, as bad as this.

When it rains here and unleashes its lightening it does it with a vengeance and the infrastructure as Elaine will testify is not the best in the world.

Actually that said i was surprised the electricity stayed on last night, so its getting better, just need the roads sorting.

We live on a hillside and our property is enclosed meaning it has a huge brick wall all round it and a huge gate so the car is parked inside the property as such.

And obviously living on a hill overlooking the valley we don't get the river of rain flooding through our property like others do, our problem was the huge amount of rain falling and simply coming in through the windows, through the limestone etc and does not help that the swimming pool flooded over either and that the drains could not handle the volume.

But we were lucky really, some serious mopping up as it came flowing in and we kept it under control, others were not so lucky.

Yeh I'm surprised the power stayed on as well Martin. I was expecting a blackout as usual!

Yeh Renee some of the cars got swept away, some got flooded. We were lucky at my house nothing too bad happened but maybe 500 meters away one of the roads had turned into a river and there was a car there with water up to the windows with it's hazards on.

Now we just wait for the strong winds and the trees getting blown over and the roof tiles flying off!!

Wow - that looked really bad. That video of the coffin going down the river was really strange. It made me think of one question.

Why was a coffin above ground? It did look empty - just curious about that - how it got there in the first place.

Well wishes to all in Malta!

I think it's because a coffin makers workshop was flooded and they somehow got out.

Not something you see everyday though..

Another bloody bad night, was about to get down to sleep at about 4.30 am and next minute i find i am outside removing the drainage covers to let the rain get away and it came down in some style again.

The swimming pool guy then awakens me at 9 am because the swimming pool needed pumping out, the gardens a bloody mess, there is dampness in the air and three of the two bedrooms got flooded again.

These houses out here are just not built for this and i don't get why, its not like it does not happen often, not a happy camper today, bloody tired and irritable and now have to drive off to the bank in another town because this town has zero ATM machines, yup zero, why i don't know, to my thinking it should be normal for every town to have an ATM.

So driving me playing miss the potholes, avoid the stray animals, avoid the crazy drivers that don't know what indicators are, your then lucky to find a parking spot and then the long queues, why because the people at the front simply ahve to chat to each other, they do it in the shops, in restaurants, at the ferry gates, you name it, they chat and the queues build up.

Don't get me wrong, i love the Maltese people, salt of the earth and its not just them, us Brits are a pain in the ass over here as well, its the laid back culture thats the issue, ok for 90% of the time but that 10% of the time you don't want it always happens when you been up all night bloody mopping out and are dog tired.

Ok rant over, just hope the rains are over now, i fear not

    That does make sense. Thanks

I must admit I would love to go to Malta some day. I remember back 15 years ago I had some good Maltese friends I hung out with. They were a blast.

I have done some research on Malta and its for sure a place I would like to spend some time soon. Besides the rain fall and storms it looks great. (Terrified of storms - I mean terrified - lol)

I read it has a population of only around 400 000 but considered one of the most dense populated areas in the world. Wow! And they use the EURO..
Looks like the place to be.. LOL

Here is a couple of pics I found online!! Been reading about Malta for the last couple of days now and really its making me interested!!
