    Default site maps

Hi - simple question - how often should a site map be submitted? Would you be penalised for submitting it too often? Does it reach a point where you no longer need to because you are being regularly indexed?

    Thanks,

I submitted my sitemap daily for the first month as I was updating it frequently, after that both Bingbot and Googlebot visited each morning on their own so no longer manually submitted.

I was under the impression A Sitemap was always a requirement for SEO in order for crawlers to work on the site correctly ? is that not true?

No longer true, it is a great tool to see what goolge thinks is important and what they consider trash though when you view your sitemap inclusion in WMT

I'd just submit it once and then let Google crawl your site naturally, saves time and submitting it manually doesn't seem to help.

a sitemap is still important! Google/Bing are not as smart as you may think in finding and indexing all of your links as they may focus on home page and the few first sub pages without a sitemap.

submit the sitemap every time your site updates - and ideally in a clear way showing which URLs were updated so that search engines know what they should look for and index your new content/pages as soon as possible.

it depends on what you're using for your website platform, but if your are using a CMS like Wordpress you'll find plenty of plugins that updates and submits your sitemap after every update

Add a link in your robots .txt, let your site update it on its own and include it in WMT... is there really still somewhere you can submit your site for google lol

The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 1 characters.

sure, if you have a website with 3-5 pages, i guess it's easy to get through all, but if you have a larger website and some pages/sections suffer updates to maybe reflect a current event, you want to point the bots exactly to that area to index it as soon as possible

that is why you have a <lastmod> tag in the sitemap for each URL. also, if you check your Googe Webmaster tools for your submitted sitemap, you will see that google does not processes your sitemap that often if you don't ping it, and if you have new content and updated sitemap, it is advisable to ping it, eases things for spiders - that is simply why all these tags are in place, maybe optional, but it can speed things up

i dont use sitemaps on my biggest non gambling related page....every written post is indexed under 30sec in google.

But u really need it if u work with dynamic pages.

You do not need to re-submit your sitemap every-time you add new content. That is a fallacy and very OCD in my opinion. When you submit a sitemap in Webmaster tools you're only informing Google of it's location, it is not meant to tell Google to crawl your site immediately.

Submit it once (Google/Bing Console) and then maybe you can use some plugins (SEO Yoast) that keep it updated for you every time there is a new post/page
