site went down in google position

one of the sites which I work for has went down in it's position. it was a very good traffic site on main kw's and suddenly in few days the traffic and position went down. does anyone have an idea why it could happen?

i just know SE position is temp only,
if it is fixed, you have to worry of it.

It could be that your competitors got ahead of you, thus you need to increase your effort. We need to do SEO constantly and effectively in order to maintain our good rankings.

Probably the competition on that keywords tend to arise compared before. Or there maybe a possibility that other people who uses the same keywords worked well in terms of their strategies that leads them to hit the higher position. Some sort of scenario like that maybe the reason.

When you say it's position dropped, do you mean for a multitude of terms and was the drop significant ie. pages rather than a few spots.
