    Default Using Godaddy for domains

Is there any disadvantage to using godaddy for all/most of your domains? I've noticed a lot of people doing it and the prices are a lot better than the renewal price of a lot of other hosts (damn you and your introductory offers!).

I just found out my .coms are renewing for £10, but I can transfer them for £4.69 so I might move everything that doesn't have a site attached.

I wouldn't be using godaddy for hosting, I spread them around...

I can't really speak to the "advantages and disadvantages" of this. I personally keep all my domains here and haven't noticed any problems as of yet. Definitely makes things easier to keep track of and manage come renewal time.

On January 15, 2012, VeriSign®, the registry for .COM will increase prices – .COM will go up 7%.

edit, sorry this is from a Godaddy email I received last week.

Some times renewals can be more expensive than the original registration and the upsells during registration can get annoying.
Generally I use namecheap for all domains.

I recently renewed my domain with GoDaddy as well. Spoke with a number of representatives over the phone who mentioned prices would be going up as of January 2012. So I locked in my price for 5 years. Totally worth doing (7% adds up + who says they won't raise prices again in a couple years?!)

Hosting, on the other hand, I'd take 1 year at a time... There always seem to be online discount offers/codes available and those prices are directly controlled by the hosts in a very competitive market...

    Just my 2 cents

There are a few things I find annoying about Godaddy (like the email every 3 days with an exclusive 30% discount) but I use it for .coms because of the price.

I've picked up a few domains from their auctions as well.

speaking of go daddy. How do you buy a domain that is in redemption period. I want one and its with go daddy.
If the person finally does renew it - but has private on can go daddy contact them on your behalf?

Been wanting a domain for a year now and its not even in use... LOL would pay big bucks for it

If it actually drops, there are drop catching services that will spam the registrar with requests when it drops in the hope of getting it for you, but they aren't cheap, and there's no guarantee they'll get it. Anything that's a good exact match gets snapped up within minutes of dropping in my experience.

Not too sure exactly how Godaddy auctions work, I assume that they try to sell anything which is due to drop soon.

I use Godaddy for most of my domain names. I don't see anything wrong with this, Godaddy are a huge and very trustworthy company. From memory, I think they are the biggest domain registrar on the web.

I used to like GoDaddy but I've grown sick of emails promoting Bob Parsons ego and the price of .co.uk domains there - 123-reg.co.uk all the way for me

Saying that though, they are safe and reliable, not a bad place to have your domains!

Godaddy won't contact anyone with hidden details, your only hope is to try and find the owner another way, domain searches, reverse IP checks (if it has a holding page on it) etc. it is a lot harder however not impossible to find someone with privacy.

If they don't renew it then it will show up in Godaddy's own auction place for dropping domains here: https://auctions.godaddy.com/

I'd also put a backorder on the domain at top dropcatching sites like snapnames.com, it means if it ever does drop you'll have an automatic $79 bid on the domain, you pay nothing in advance so no harm.

I actually did some training on acquiring existing domains and dropcatching at my old company and I still have the slides, let me know if you want a sneak peek

FWIW -- just last month I moved all of my domains from Yahoo! Webhosting to GoDaddy. I've been very pleased with the service, and the prices can't be beat.

Be careful of the godaddy auctions. Most of their domains are for sale elsewhere anyway. I bought one and paid for it. Godaddy cancelled the transaction within two hours and did refund the money but I still had a $100 loss on the currency exchange from my UK bank account to USD and back again.

Godaddy stated to me the domain name had been listed by the owner who had sold it elsewhere and then not de-listed it with them. I contacted the owner through the whois and he told me it was never listed and certainly would not be sold for the price I bought it for and that a fraudster must have listed it. I confronted godaddy with this (to auction department by email) and they then blamed a partner site for the listing but would not admit it was listed by a fraudster rather than the original owner. They refused to refund my loss which was only incurred due to their ****-up. The godaddy auction department has not got telephone support and normal customer support (who are helpful) won't transfer you to them. The auction department take 48 hours to respond to an email if at all. All in all, having bought plenty of domains elsewhere, the Godaddy auction department rates as a total shambles that does not do its correct due diligence on the names it lists and doesn't give a damn when they sell you a bogus domain.

Didn't matter to the auction dept that I was an existing customer of several years standing on the hosting side of things. The normal customer service said all the right things but ultimately, after a one hour phone call, was completely ineffective.

dont buy from godaddy. The scumbag who owns them goes hunting rhinos and all sorts of endangered species. So if you're an animal lover, go elsewhere!
