What Would You Do?

Hypothetical situation.

You have a domain name that is very general and broad . Gambling.com for example.

You are tasked with coming up with an strategy/plan for the site which will work on an affiliate marketing model (not an operator).

What do you do with the site? Do you try something new/creative or do you continue start writing the rules of blackjack articles?

Assume you have:

a) Unlimited budget
b) $50,000

I'm interested to see how creative people would get and what they would do if they had this opportunity. Would they invest it all in links, or would they try develop a user generated content platform. Would they cover all forms of gambling or just do one good. Would they develop an app or unique service? I came up with the question when I saw Poker.org recently and recall that they were in a similar situation (may not be accurate).

Perhaps people are reluctant to share their idea and that's cool. This is hypothetical so feel free to get very vague or suggest developing a script that infiltrates a common Wordpress plugin and then uses the host sites domain authority and strength to rank for high converting casino terms

I'd sell it to some rich domain-crazy sucker and use the cash (plus the $50,000 I already have) to create a real branded product.

A bit difficult without knowing the exact domain - but generally ...

A generic domain name is not a guarantee of riches - or even good search engine placement - and it's almost useless when it comes to establishing a brand name.

Think of the generic names sex.com, porn.com, food.com, news.com, whiskey.com, beer.com, poker.com, cars.com football.com etc. Or any other subject that interests you - and then go and take a look at what sort of site is sitting there. All "great" names - nearly all average so-so sites.

If you can find a venture capital or private equity firm that wants to pay 6/7 figures for the undeveloped domain then I'd jump all over it and sell. Domain names are an address - they are no guarantee of success. That idea was a dot.com fallacy IMO.

I was probably a little unclear on the domain part. I was not implying that the domain was premium and gambling.com was used as an example to show how broad the sites' scope is. Consider brandable names like. GamblingBible or BettingGuru if it helps get a clearer picture.

I'd have a bash at developing something. it's hard to suggest how but you'd need to sit down and have a long hard think about how to make your new project as 'sticky' as possible. It would have to be done by exclusive offer, user reviews, forums, competitions and the like but you also need to have a plan as to why yours would be better than what is already out there, not an easy task.
There is nothing to say it can't be done but it obviously would be hard, and time and labour intensive. Beauty is if it doesn't work you could trash the site and sell the domain

Forget branding (unless you have unlimited time too), register a domain with the keywords you're after, at least your visitors can now distinguish what is a real site or a hacked one.
Usually names containing non related words are tough to get those ranked well.
EMD domains are ok unless you upset the algos.
