Wow, Renee you paint a wonderful picture of your place. Being close to work is important though. I chose the other way around and stopped going into clients and worked from home.

Steve you need to head east rather than west. I'd love to live in the Thousand Island area off Gananoque. Had a poke around there and the Thirty Thousand Island area (ever worse weather though) and love the look of the area.

Maybe something like the following. I'm still trying to work out a link between me and this island because the original name is the same as my surname.

Maybe something more realistic like this one. Life would be nice during the warmer months.

To be honest, it's really not as bad as I say it is..

The only thing that makes it the ghetto is the type of people who live there.
They are just terrible... True fair dinkum bogans.

The way they scream at each other is just terrible.. I can't even understand their accents..

    "Who fahhhhhhhhhhrkn hitchya?"
    "I dahno who faaaaaaahrkn hitme"
    "You fahhhhrkn know who hitchya!"

And it goes on and on..

The woman next door is constantly screaming at her kids.. So bad so that I've considered calling DOCs on occasion. Worst thing is that because she is screaming in Indian I can't understand what she is saying so it's hard to determine whether she is just screaming for the fun of it or not. But of course then the kids start crying and screaming and even though we are nowhere near their apartment we can hear them.. It's worse with the windows open.

The people on top of us leave their TV BLARING until all hours of the morning.. It's hard to get to sleep hearing it anyway, but then I wake up at 4.30am and it's still just as loud. Getting back to sleep after that is a mission.. And if we leave our window open while we sleep, there is no chance of falling asleep.. They also have people over on a sunday night with music blaring and people jumping up and down so it sounds like our roof is going to cave in, and when you're trying to sleep and people are jumping it's not cool...

Now, where I USED to live was amazing.

Port Kembla Beach was right around the corner of my house:

    There was also North Beach:

    And South Wollongong Beach:

The lighthouse in between north and south beach:

The view over Wollongong from the mountain:

I really miss Wollongong on the weekends

I live in a 1bdr apartment in St Kilda, Melbourne.

10 mins walk away from the beach (which isn't really a beach, as Melbourne is in a bay), and about 8km from Melbourne CBD.

The location is extremely convenient, and the "buzz" around St Kilda is usually pretty fun and laid back.

After Melbourne, I think it would be hard for me to live anywhere else in the world again.

I live in a 3 bedroom townhouse in a suburb called Ravenswood East of Johannesburg. We're basically a stones throw from the O.R Tambo Int. Airport and yes there is crime and no it's not all that bad, when compared to other places of the world, and people are quick to forget about just how beautiful our country actually is.

What's great about the place where I live is that the people are nice, friendly and you can make friends really easily but regrettably the people from "The East Rand" are associated to that of people of having a mild or no intellect at all and are usually the butt of every joke. Affiliates from ZA will know what I'm referring to.

"I can like to be tuning you and stuffs"

What I really like about Johannesburg itself is the fact that many people refer to it as a "man made forest" and the reason for that if you are ever presented with an opportunity to gaze over the Johannesburg skyline you will notice that there are more trees than rooftops sticking out.

Here are some amateur photos taken of Johannesburg's Tree-line

I now live in Dunmow, Essex - which is an hour or so from central London.

I am currently renting a 3 bedroom house next to woodland and fields (I have 2 small dogs that love being walked).

I am from Gibraltar but have lived in a 4 bedroom house with a pool in southern Spain for the last 6 years.

My wife and I came to the UK for the birth of our son, Oliver (3 weeks old).

Whilst I like Dunmow and this part of the world, I still miss my house (which I still own) and lifestyle in Spain - the weather is better in Spain too.

However, we came here for the support of my wife's family and we will probably end up going back in a few years.

I'll be heading to Joburg in 26 days!

Nice to get a view of the place before I get there.. I don't mind a bit of shrubbery.

    Hey Conrad
You have made me quite proud of my own town...those photos are lovely!!
I know what you mean about the jokes about the East Rand, but for what its worth - I prefer the people from the East than the North as they are way more down to earth than the snobs in the North...and I should know because I come from the North originally !!

    Hey Topboss,

You are welcome, I too tend to forget how beautiful and chaotic our country is and that it is full of different contrasts.
The sad part is that we are so easily consumed by the day to day humdrum of work that we no longer take the time
    to enjoy our surroundings.

I know exactly what you mean about the people from the north, and as far as I am concerned I'm not being judgmental
it's just that they have different ideas about how to live life and that keeping up with the Jones' features high on their
    list of priorities.

I also know about it because I used to live in Northcliff, the second photo was taken on top of Northcilff Hill. Anyway I
moved from there for that specific reason to have a better quality of life, to actually enjoy life without it always being
a constant competition with one's fellow man.

    I totally agree with you.
Funny you should mention Northcliff as that is exactly where I have lived most of my life but now live in RandPark Ridge - which is a little more West than North...
Thanks again for making me proud of our country and seeing the beauty all over again..

I live in a small village called Erimi in Cyprus, about 25 minutes from the town of Limassol where I work. The village has a huge number of expats, many retired but increasing numbers of younger ones.

We have a 3 bedroom town house with a small communal pool, but we're only 15 minutes drive to a beach and there's also a bigger pool attached to a complex in the village we can use. We've lots of fields nearby for walking the dog although many are getting built on, even though the housing market has crashed.

There are a few different drinking places, including 2 typical vilage social clubs. There's also a couple of small shops and a couple of places doing food, including a great local taverna where the owner plays the bouzouki at the end of the evening.

Some things in Cyprus do get on your nerves, mainly anything official, but I've lived here for 5 years now and it's a great place to be.

Many moons ago (94-95) I live in St Kilda too, near the corner of Grey and Barkly St in an older style art deco 1 bedroom apartment - before St Kilda went up market cosmopolitan.

Back then it was one of the safest places I've ever lived. Ironic considering St Kilda used to be known for its seedy night clubs of which Bojangles(a haunt back then for Melbourne's underworld) and was featured in the aussie movie "Chopper"....

I am so envious of all of you! I Love reading about where everyone lives and I can day dream about maybe someday having my own home to love too! Right now we live in a 2 bedroom apt, that has maybe about 800 sq. feet, and we have 7 cats and one real big ass dog! lol

I live in Connecticut, which is expensive, expensive, expensive, and for a family like ourselves can be quit hard to manage. My son lives Nevada near Nellis Air Force where he is a Sargent now, and we have been considering moving out there with his help, so that may be pretty cool, and then maybe i can go to a conference in Vegas!! whoohoo! lol

Jarvi, fantastic taste in homes!...If you end up buying one of these, can you look for a "Buy 1 get 1 deal? lollllllll

I'll be there for a holiday, doing some sightseeing, touching as many animals as I can, going to a wedding in Matjiesfontein, partying with some of the boys in Cape Town, then coming home.
It's going to be a very quick trip.. I'll be visiting Heather while I'm in Joburg too.

If you're going to be partying with the boyz in Cape Town, you won't have to go far for the animals

    Hi Jarvi,

Thanks for your interest and sorry for the late reply. We had a couple of bank holidays over here and I was out of the office.

No worries actually, Mauritius is endowed with a reliable, efficient and supportive infrastructure, mainly because we are a tourist island and also because we have some big investors looking to pitch their tents over here since we can provide a reliable and smart workforce.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Amy. Always better to get on the ground knowledge rather than tourism brochure spin.
