    Default Will Obama do it?

    Hello everybody

Watching Obama’s inauguration the other day I couldn’t help thinking what his attitude will be towards online gaming.

The fact that he is a poker player doesn’t mean much, John McCain is a Craps player but he definitely wasn’t going to lift the ban. Obama though has said that he would like to regulate online poker and gambling rather than criminalise it. And in case you haven’t heard, only yesterday a court in Kentucky ruled that poker is a game of skill

So what do you think? Should we keep our expectations high?

I think we should keep our expectations high, but not become complacent.

The fact that he's put a stop order on all pending regulations that were signed into law in the last days of Bush's term to be halted is an unexpected bonus, and bodes well for the future.

We should still be making noise, such as visiting this site http://citizensbriefingbook.change.g...Pos=0&srKp=087 and leaving a message.

I hate to give off "negative energy" on this subject, but don't expect to see anything happen in the immediate future.

Casino City's Vin Narayanan had a great piece in the Online CC Newsletter yesterday about this exact subject:

I agree with you 100% . We have to keep stirring that pot at every chance we get.

Hopefully he will bring change to the industry in the US compared to what is is now. I can not imagine the political environment being any more histile than it is right now.

So, there is no where to go but up!

Perhaps the WTO dispute will take a different path now with a new U.S. administration:

    Thumbs down

US administrative policy is like one of those mega oil-tankers. Even if the captain changes course or speed it takes over 30 kilometres for those ships to actually make a turn.

Presidential focus and priority is not on online gambling, and there will not be any course change during the first year or so. I don't expect any obvious change during the next 2-3 years - unless there is extreme agitation from Vegas casinos wanting to get in on the action.

Money talks - and currently the US government believes it will make more money from crushing online gambing and pushing it through real world casinos and collecting taxes that way ...

(That seems to be the constant thread in federal action and publicised discussion - US regulation is best - US taxes are desired - and now ... US jobs are protected )

IF things do turn around - he will not be the primary, secondary, tertiary, or possibly even the quaternary reason that they do. With all due respect, the president is basically just a figure head...

I am really hopeful that it will be a u turn, although I think the 30km analogy is close to the mark unfortunately.

I'm guessing there's not much political will to address this issue in the current financial mess. Unless of course, the members of Congress realize how much money they would generate in taxes.... we'll see.
