Im getting ready to redesign a website of mine www.onlinepokerbonus.info (which needs it badly) and I am going to do it in Wordpress. I'm fairly new to wordpress, just recently beginning to use it for my blogs.

Would anyone like to share a few quick tips for using wordpress for an entire site design. Quick hits that can save time, look good or just good ideas.

Hi,

Well...after being the victim of Viagra links injection bot on a WP site (was using 2.8 and not 3.0.1), the first and foremost thing - keep your WP core updated. This also includes plug-ins and theme updates too.

Over and above that there are ways to harden WP. You may find this useful:

As a suggestion from another member, I've changed my chmod perm on my config file to 600 & not the 644 the generic standard.

disagree with this a bit - there are so many themes with really bad on-page markup out there.. Ensure your desired theme is SEO friendly and standards compliant- if it ain't, make it so!

Even if you go down the route of grabbing a free and then modifying it, this book is worthwhile because if gives a good background. You also get updates.

If this is one of your main sites, I would hire someone to do it, or go as custom as possible instead of free themes. For one, you are giving links awar right off the bat with a free theme, usually around 3.

There are sites you can pay to convert html to wordpress that charge like $10. THey definitely aren't perfect, but are good to use as a start. Here is one I used before: http://www.themespress.com/

Lastly, if that doesn't work out you could always just buy a theme. One poker theme that is for sale is this one: xxhttp://www.flytonic.com/themes/high-roller-black (I have no association with this site). It's not the greatest, but they do several things well so it will save you a lot of time.

And of course, if you don't want to drop a dime, do it free: http://thethemefoundry.com/blog/html-wordpress/ or google some sites on converting html to wordpress.

Great info - thanks. I like the high roller theme but I am a cheap sob! I have definitly seen that theme around. Not sure what I want to do now??

If you know some CSS, HTML, have an eye for design and can learn from forums, I highly recommend this theme: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/atahualpa

It is highly customizable, though I've heard the code is sloppy. I don't know code that well. I like it though, and it is free.

If you like it then its a no brainer. I also consider myself extremely cheap and it has taken me about 5 years to actually invest any kind of money into my designs (my last site cost over $1000 for design so far). The reason I started to do it, is I am a firm believer that a well designed site will convert much better than a poorly designed one. Think of it like this, you are trading 1 CPA for the design of your site Small investment and worse case you can sell the site later and it will likely keep this amount spent into consideration for what you are selling it for.
