Yea there are several SEO plugins. All in one seo pack is about the best I've seen.

Wordpress can be great for SEO but requires good management from you.

A couple of basic things:

- Avoid slow loading pages by using a caching plugin such as W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache

- Wordpress can create duplicate content issues by displaying full posts on category pages as well as the actual post. You can avoid this by using the "Read More" tag or blocking category archives from search engines.

- As already mentioned, the All In One Seo Plugin is ideal for managing page titles and meta descriptions. It also allows you to use different words for a posts title and the page title.

Some other plugins I always use: Yet Another Related Posts Plugin, Google XML Sitemaps, Dagon Design Sitemap Generator.

I am using the all in one SEO pack for wordpress on my website.
I have been quite happy with it so far.

wordpress is good
easy and fast to set up and tune
but too slow.

even cache plugins can't help sometimes.

I would also agree that worpress can be a good help for your SEO. As to my experience utilizing Wordpress is just so easy, the navigation is easy to understand as well as its navigation. From the combination of both a bunch of traffic can be gain, well if done perfectly.

Wordpress is great indeed and generally it´s very well treated by Google. However, a lot of webmasters rely too much on plugins ending up with a very bad code, hidden links from the plugin developers and (my favorite) huge update problems. Chances are very high that you cannot just do a wordpress update when you have tons of plugins running because they stop working if they are not compatible.

Don´t install too many plugins, specially not exotic ones that aren´t being updated very often. Use cahing plugins (W3 Total cache is my favorite) and GOOD seo plugins (Yoast´s Wordpress SEO is way better then All in One)

As everybody said, YES.
I recommend the following plugins: All in one seo, xml sitemap generator, and seo no duplicate content.
Still, in order to fully control WP SEO wise you'll need to play a bit with the code and get control over all headers (and avoid the auto ones assigned by WP). There are plugins for that but I'm not sure how good they are. WP usually assigns automatically many h2 and h3 to menu titles and others. Try to avoid that.
One of the best things in WP is that the code is compact and Google likes it. Some of the other non open source cms out there can be quite messy.
In this view I would also recommend getting a right sidebar menu template. Simply because of the hierarchy of the code is such templates is more SE friendly.
All in all I've had great experience in transferring old html sites to WP and I recommend it.

I've watched a video before that includes an interesting story about why google loves wordpress. For a quick answer to this question, "WordPress takes care of 80-90% of Google’s crawling issues simply through it’s design", addressed by Matt Cutts. You know the head of Google's Webspam team right? (www.mattcutts.com)

Google simply considers a site with good structure. This means their crawlers will have no difficulty landing on the deepest page of the site or blog. This address indexation problem and proper link juice distribution between inner pages and the Wordpress platform is capable of helping you with it. So, does it help in achieving decent SEO performance/results? Of course.
