I must admit I have a Wikipedia link which produces a few hundred uniques a month to an affiliate site.
I'm not saying what site or article though, it's in a competitive niche and someone is bound to squash it.

Links from wiki are good for sending traffic but beyond that, you can't expect anything more. And you need to keep a constant watch on the keywords/page. and well, when you have the traffic, why bother about anything else.

It doesn't help. I've done all of this stuff and still they don't accept my site. It is much easier to get listed in DMOZ

Yahoo deals with some certain policies. But I have heard that Yahoo allow the gambling sites of the UK version which I have come to know from various articles. But they have stopped this feature in US.

Me too! Although I got impatient and emailed them about it - they were pretty good actually, had a response within 24 hours and the refund credited within a couple of days. Squeaky wheel and all that

There is no UK version of the yahoo directory anymore, it was consolidated into the main directory. There are gambling sites in there but, as discussed above, they are not accepting new sites.

Submit to BOTW. I tihink it's worth the money. The only way to get listed to DMOZ is when you have friends among the editors. Imho DMOZ has degenerated to a band of crooks, accepting only the happy few. Fortunately Matt Cutts is also aware of this, as he told in one of his recent videos.

So whats the trend these days? Is it still not possible to get a site listed in the Yahoo Directory? I would give it a shot but certainly do not want to lose the $300 - which about 50 % of the people submitting lose - as they are selectively refunding only certain people.

Is BOTW really worth it? If it is why? Its a paid directory - so why would google put any value on that particular link knowing the person bought it?

It makes no sense really - since they frown upon manipulating the search results with paid listings - would that not increase your risk of a penalty?

Dmoz i think is a decent directory to get listed in. I know it takes a very long time.

I have submitted many sites - and so far after 2 years of waiting only one site has been listed. The other ones I listed were about a year ago - so i would expect another year before a listing gets even looked at.

I honestly feel the amount of requests they have is in the thousands and being that they manually submit them - it could be just people are not waiting long enough.

I would guess it could take 2-5 years to be listed.

This is a little harsh on DMOZ editors.

A crucial thing to remember is that the rules prevent editors adding pure affiliate sites - there needs to be genuinely useful content for users to get a listing. Many, many submitters forget/ignore this.

As for it taking years, there is no specific time that it takes. The issue is that it is a voluntary role and there are huge piles of submissions for editors to wade through, most of which are irrelevant. If you get an active editor you could potentially get your link up the next day.

As for corruption, I'm sure it has happened, but it's certainly not a bunch of crooks. Any allegations would be taken very seriously. Remember that it is not against the rules for editors to add their own sites, or their friends' sites, if they meet the criteria.

Besides, a link in DMOZ is not some magic bullet - people tend to over-value them because a lot of ranking / tracking software checks for them. They tend to be on high PR pages, and DMOZ gets scraped, so you get some more links from it. That's about it.

Read the rules and criteria and get your submission right, and that will elevate you above 90% of submissions.

I've been trying to get my one bingo site in for years, with no luck. It is 100% unique content that cannot be found elsewhere on the web (except where it's been pinched from me.) Given the rubbish listed in the category it would go in, content wise it's heads and shoulders above everything listed, but still they won't add it. If it can't get in then it illustrates that either the people editing the category aren't checking sites, or they're only adding those that they know / slip them some coin.

I've got non-gaming sites in there fairly easily in the past, but the gaming sections that I've looked at are full of guff. Not a good user-experience at all.

I was adviced by a seo specialist and also many articles on the web describe it's importance. Google doesn't consider BOTW and Yahoo a paid directory, as Matt Cutts answers in one of his videos: http://technology.feedfury.com/conte...aid-links.html

I think I had to call them to get the refund, but it went back to my card a couple of days after speaking to billing. I'd try giving them a ring.

They emailed back within 24 hours saying they had forwarded the request to a specialist, and then I received another email a day later. Refund hit my card within a couple of days!
