Default You Know You’re Getting Old When…

My go-to radio station on Alexa is Greatest Hits Radio nowadays, which is clearly telling me something, but the fact that they keep playing some absolute bangers from the 90s which are now in the ‘greatest hits’ category must mean I’m officially old!

    Anyone else experiencing signs?!

I realized I am getting old when I was the only one in the room who knew that the "save icon" was actually depicting a floppy disk haha.

I've started noticing subtle changes like becoming forgetful regarding small, trivial things. I've also been getting a lot of pain in my left hand, especially in my fingers, and I've been taking Nurofen Zavance medication to relieve it. I try to rest my hand as much as possible to avoid triggering the pain or worsening it. Sometimes, the pain keeps me up at night. I never had any of these health problems throughout my 20s or 30s.

I realized I was getting older when I started paying more attention to my limits. Staying up all night and going straight to work the next day? Nope. Jumping into any workout regardless of how I feel or how long it’s been since I last trained? Also a no.

For me, it hasn’t been one big moment but rather small shifts in how I do things.

I once encountered the claim that in the past it was easier to stay young longer (everyone may understand something different under this term), because there were not such differences between generations and people of different ages (physical limitations aside). It used to be that father, son and grandson lived in virtually the same or similar realities. Today, successive generations are already being raised in different realities every now and then, learning different things, and the difference is growing between generations, including often in world views.

Something like someone transported back in time from the year 500 to the year 1000 would see a similar world. By contrast, someone from 1800 in 2025 would certainly be puzzled and have difficulty acclimating at first.

That's why now, one can probably feel old faster. But this is just an overheard theory, but an interesting one. I somewhat agree with it.

I used to be able to work 16, 24 or more hours without stop. Physically or mentally demanding tasks. Without eating, drinking, abusing substances etc.

Now I have a problem to sustain 8-12 hours of physical work that is not that much demanding, because a lot of time I must manage some people online of offline, so I have pauses. Just few hours of helping to carpenters, painting or crimpling cables and I am done and often get sick. Even when I work physically less hours than 8, I need to take an afternoon nap.

I do not know whether I am getting old, or sick, or I stretched something too far before or I am stretching something too far right now, because the multitasking is hard. While multitasking one never gets job 100% and that needs an extra energy, because one needs to constantly contemplate why there are so many errors.

The drop of abilities or of my physical wellbeing was abrupt and it is deep. Today was a hard day. I had to work over 12 hours, because mice started to eat both cables and my car (and I did not sleep during previous night, because I was guarding my cat against pumas [the cat was killing mice]). But at the end of the work twice suddenly started weird sound in my ear and I almost fainted.

Other workers of my age around me work harder than me and they do not seem to have those problems, so I guess it is not just the age. But maybe it is individual.

Pumas?!? I live near a mountain and have seen snakes, opossums, and feral cats, but the sole idea of a Puma is too much for me. Are they common there? Definitely, I am too old or too untrained to deal with that.

I hope you are feeling better today.
