1997 - 2010 RIP Hotmail

I signed up for my original hot mail account in 1997 and today I finally deleted the account. I had no choice considering I was receiving more than 2,000 emails a month from places I never even heard of. I got sex offers, penis enlargements offers, I could even help people in Africa with their finances but I have decided to throw all that fun stuff away and go with a new account.

To give you an idea of how old this hot mail account actually was, my password was only 4 letters and not 6 or 7 like it is now a days.

I've never understood why people used Hotmail for any serious messages. There used to be lists of domain names with hotmail addys in the reg details. I gather people used to cruise the lists and steal the names by grabbing control of the Hotmail accounts.

Agreed about the poor look of hotmail - and gmail too - for commercial communications. It just shouts low-rent and/or SPAM

I do actually have a gmail account though - Google insisted that I set one up at some stage with one of the tools I tried out - but I've never actually used it.

Same happened here, have a gmail account, never used it but had to have one for something i used with Google tools.

I also agree that the use of a hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo mail address for commercial purposes gives off the wrong impression from the get go.

I have an old hotmail account, it was the first free email I set up. I rarely use it anymore, but luckily the spam is under control.

It's actually Hotmail themselves that cause this problem.
They sell your email addy to list buyers....I kicked them years ago when I found out about this.

As for gmail, I use them for gen purpose. I also have my other maybe 100 email addys forward to it. EAsier to check one place, and only have to respond to a small percentage anyway. Saves a lot of time, and gmail has more storage space than anywhere else.

Anything private I forward to my desktop email account to save. But it's hard to get around w/o having your privacy invaded by someone.

My bus email comes thru the website server, and my personal email comes thru AT&T ( big spammers themselves).

The big problem with hotmail, gmail or any other junk mail account is the user has very little control. I was receiving custom tailored adds based on my search history. Suppose I agreed to it somewhere in the fine print. As for spam I considered it a vital part of holding such accounts. After all they are meant for junk so I was never surprised.

To use these types email accounts for business IMO would be insane. The level of security is very poor forging another account is easily done amongst other deviate little hiccups. I dumped my hotmail account a few months back sad to see it go but it was necessary. I agree with others whether it be gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc... for business communication is not good.

I use hotmail for personal and spam catch-all accounts. When I sign up for a newsletters, at forums, for poker leagues, etc... hotmail is the email I use.

For business I use my @mydomainname account. I have several aliases there, one for general administration purposes, one for newsletter sign ups, one for newsletter unsubscribe, and one for player support.
