    It's a wildly unreliable metric.

Being a GPWA member has a major effect on Alexa rankings. There is a high concentration of webmasters here with the toolbar installed, so if your site is in your signature and you post a lot, your rankings will be heavily skewed.

For example, Alexa claims that over 50% of my traffic comes from GPWA - the actual figure is more like 0.1%.

Alexa also rates the GPWA in the top 10K sites, which (with respect) is crazy. It's down to the high concentration of toolbar users.

    Lightbulb No actually but

It is one of the good indicators for selecting niche keywords.

Seriously, is that even possible. Would love to see how a crap 1 page website can have 100k ranking in Alexa and that too in a week..

Sadly, that probably is possible, I've seen it done - although not quite to that scale. Alexa is not a reliable metric, it's a good general indicator when taken among others but it can be gamed very easily by someone with a bit of know-how. All you need is a lot of 'visitors' with the toolbar installed, which is relatively easy to spoof.

Plenty of people have been duped into buying worthless sites because of it.

Also, being a GPWA member with a sig link that gets some interest has a huge effect on Alexa rankings, because there is a high concentration of people with the toolbar installed here.

    Alright.. this is FACT!

One of my "non-gambling" sites have an Alexa rank of 5,095,226 as of today.
If you care about PR it's a PR2
    Indexed pages in google: 14

SERP rank google.com primary keywords = 1 accordingly to seoserp
Unique visitors / day (google analytics) = 56

    So..

    Alexa is worth Shiets!

    Just my 2 cents..

I have 3 sites (non-gambling) and Alexa ranks them in reverse order according to actually traffic.

Then get the toolbar or any toolbar with the ranking, get a list of proxies, and start visiting your website . Will drop quite fast, however once they sign up that deal, will most likely understand that it has been fake.

OK,OK, this is almost a worthless topic now, it's all opinion and mine is no better than the rest of yours. Reading the posts in here, my opine might just be worse than yours, but with all the talk about it, wouldnt most of you (I know I would) rather have a lower (better) ranking than a high (worse) one?

I appreciate the feedback but - as you rightly say - they would be unhappy with the lack of visitors

Alexa is an indicator such as Google PR. Alexa rankings can be compared to its website competition.

I also noticed that when you win tickets to the Alexa ranking, in parallel, it is also better placed in the Google rankings.

I look at Alexa as a "cool tool", something that does not hold much value, but is fun to look at and do some comparisons. As "thegooner" said, Alexa only pulls their stats from people that have the Alexa toolbar installed, which is a small percentage.

I do believe that Alexa results can be manipulated.
For example a few years back we did the following test:
Each of us in the office ( about 5 of us ) installed the Alexa toolbar, we then set a specific website as our home page ( one of our smaller sites that didn't get much traffic )
We recorded the results and within a week we had dropped our alexa rank literally by hundreds of thousands and we knew this was mainly due to the site loading every time we opened our browser and it was not due to genuine traffic as the site in question was quite new and didn't get much search engine traffic.

Did not follow up from the beginning, now it is hard to follow. An update post on the top of thread will be helpful if the question and answers were more than 3 or more pages.

I was discussing some SEO aspects with one of my pals. He was saying that his sites are not doing good, in terms of Google Ranking, even after good quantity of link exchange. However, he stressed upon Alexa ranking and said that Alexa Ranking is improving for all his sites but not Google Rank.

Now, my question is, Can Alexa ranking influence Google ranking?

It's true that its not trustworthy tool.

For example my site's rank is something like 290.00, its worst than a friends site with rank nearly 80,00, but i have much more visitors...

As an authentic experience: In Russia some webmasters do not even know about such a rating. I think, it could be sometimes useful to analyze your rivals, but as betinstyle said, you never can be sure.
