Best Keywords to optimise for Poker Affiliate Site?

Hi,
Apologies if a little bit of a how long is a piece of string type question, but we are looking to optimise a new website for poker related keywords.

What 12 keywords would everyone recommend for a new poker affiliate site?

oh man - there are 100s. Hard to say whats best. It would depend on what type of market your after. There are so many factors.

One of the hardest ones to rank for and highly impossible is "online poker" - my assumption would be you would need thousands of links to even get close.

Other ones such as poker bonus, poker sites, poker rooms and various others still need 100s at least to get any sort of leverage.

May be best to go after long tail search strings! I would guess the best way is to use a keyword tool to research this.

It will takes months - if not maybe over a year to rank decent and you have to be patient and go slow!

Large $$$$$ is also need IMO

Thanks for the response. We do have an SEO budget, so would hope to have something to get stuck into, appreciate the road will be long though!

To get good, basic understanding of your target market I would also suggest to check out the 'Google Keyword Tool'

It will roughly give you the number of monthly searches of your target country and combines them with the overall competitiveness of the keywords. So the best keyword to go for would be the one with the highest search volume and lowest competition. Obviously this is going to be a trade off.

If you are thinking people are just going to come and post their best keywords in this thread you are dreaming. If you want to really find this info out, look at the biggest poker affiliate sites and see what they are targetting. That should give you a good indication.

Also, I wouldn't be putting money into SEO "for 12 best keywords" based on what some people on a forum say.

It sounds more like you just want to buy yourself in easily without knowing the market. Something I wouldn't recommend.

Selecting keywords is very case specific and will differ from affiliate to affiliate. You will have to create your own list and keep on fine tuning it. I would try to explain you what I tell other affiliates. Some of the stuff is repetitive, but worth it.

1) Select and Research your niche and select a few keywords to target
2) Research the best poker sites out there and pick up a few keywords that you can optimise
3) Research the commercial viability, competition & cost of optimising for keyword(s). Don't just focus on the search volume or main keywords.
4) I guess you already have your website and are not starting from scratch. So consider the domain name related keywords, if it is poker related.
5) Apart from the above make a list of long tail keywords based on the copy of your website and your domain.
6) Speak to as many affiliate managers and affiliates on these forums and make note of what they suggest, Match these with your researched keywords.

A lot depends on how big your budget is and what sort of resources you have at your disposal for optimisation. That will decide on how aggressive you can be. Sometimes just having one website is not good enough, so you need to consider if you get allocate resource for maintaining and optimising multiple websites. If you can do more websites, I would also add one more step to the above 6 - getting the right domain name.

True! And mentioning some of the keyword tools you are talking, as the OP poster may not be aware of them, would be more than a help, IMO.

Anyways, like the first responder have noted, GFPC, there are 100s. And our best keywords might not be that best when it comes to you. So, looking at keyword stats provided by those authentic keyword tools such as the Google Keyword Tool might help you understand which are best for you to target. (Might also be correlated to the topic attacked you have this poker site you'll be building.)

Moreover, if you like some tool to help you discover long tail queries related to the niche your targeting, I'm highly recommending you make use of the wordtracker tool. Part of their service is paid, but there is one side of it that's free which you can take advantage of. It's the keyword questions tool located at http://labs.wordtracker.com/keyword-questions - with this tool, you just have to type in the base keyword, click search and it will respond queries with that keyword asked by searchers on search engines like google.

Well, what more could I say, I think I've already mentioned one of my ways to get long tail traffic. The number right next to the keyword phrase indicates how many are using the same query. Moreover, I've been noticing it changes often, so I think that suggest the tool is quite up-to-date. Now, it's time for you to try it.

if u have a seo budget, maybe you should spend it and get the SEOers to do some research for you...
