Default Bing / Yahoo Search engine

According to new data from StatCounter, Yahoo has seen a nearly 2 point search market share gain in the US in the past month. Attributing it to the recent Yahoo-Firefox default search deal, StatCounter reported that Yahoo had a share of 10.4 percent vs. 8.6 percent a year ago.
Google had a December share of 75.2 percent and Bing a share of 12.5 percent. According to the most recent data available from comScore, which pre-dates the Firefox deal, Google had a 67 percent share, Bing 19.6 percent and Yahoo 10.2 percent in the US.

The Yahoo-Firefox deal was announced in November. The browser has a roughly 16 percent share of the US market according to StatCounter. These search gains could be material to Yahoo in terms of revenue — especially if they hold up over time.
StatCounter characterized Yahoo’s post-Firefox position as its “highest US search share since 2009.” The company said by comparison that Google was a its lowest share “yet recorded by StatCounter.”
Last month StatCounter showed Yahoo with a significant search bump among Firefox 34 users:

Are there equivalent figures for the share of UK and/or Europe search available? Would be interesting to see those figures, I'd guess that we're 'behind' the US in terms of a less dominant position for google, but what happens in the US tends to follow further down the line for the UK etc.

Firefox rocks. I've always preferred it over the others, but as far as bing and yahoo go, they're just not advanced enough to seriously compete with google.

But why Firefox made the default search deal with Yahoo if Google is better in terms of technologies?

Surprised that bing's share is so small, considering every xbox, surface, and mobile device is set default with bing, and I always see these big numbers in the press.. but looking at my stats they do not come close.. for every 1000 google entrances i get per haps 8 to 10 of yahoo and bing combined

Our Bing traffic was up 20% in 2014 over 2013 on pretty flat overall figures, so they're growing in importance to us in that respect.

That said, Bing and Yahoo combined is almost exactly 10% of our organic traffic though so focus is still clearly on google for us.

I guess that Bing may bring more visitors to my sites than Google since some of my terms rank better on Bing than on Google, although there are not too many visitors to my sites.

Look at today as a snapshot - my realtime stats say ...

    Google 2500, Yahoo 120, Bing 82, OTher 50 (ask, Aol, ?? )
From about total 13,000 visits today ...

THat puts Yahoo at about 5% of Google - nowhere near the 29% in the graph or the 8-10% you mention. I guess Bing / Yahoo are slightly bigger in the US (we get a lot of diverse international traffic).

I am really impressed that Yahoo gaining market share. It's a pity that yahoo Directory has closed its online venue.
From the other point of view, I am happy about that as, I am owner of growing gambling/gaming directory.
It will be good time for very quality niche directories.
Customers of yahoo Directory must go somewhere and are looking for quality online "places".

Do you know that Firefox is much more popular in Europe. !!! In Poland it's market share is around 40%, I suppose.
However, I am dissappointed that Bing do not improve its market share.
I think the others, mean Chinese Baidu and Russian Yandex that are getting popular. I receive a lot of traffic from them.

I get most of my traffic from the US and it's poor for Bing and yahoo.. lots of stories around of increases for the last decade.. but nobody I know ever gets traffic from them, Worst of all for my competition keywords they seem to favor spammy thin sites that have no value at all... their tech is outdated.. even their webmaster tools update 6 months too late.. for my it's google then Social

I'm being nosy here, if you have 13,000 visits and 2,500 are from Google and bits and bobs the other search engines - then where do you get all your other hits from?

I think most of them are returning visitors + maybe also some from social activity. It would be interesting to discuss if that´s a good ratio new visitors vs. returning visitors...

Analytics lists five sources ... ours in order of volume are ...

    Organic search (SEs),
    Direct (Type-In or Bookmark),
    Referral (other sites in industry),
    Social (Twitter/Facebook),
    Other (?)

We are particularly strong in Direct (volume matches search - I've been nagging for people to bookmark for years), and have good Referral numbers (links with some high trafficked sites - no idea what their PR is) and growing in Social.

What's really interesting is the other demographics that come out by "channel" :
    - Referral is the best for reaching goals (clicks to bookmakers) (3 times higher than search)
    - Direct has the lowest bounce rate, most pages per visit and good click ratio
    - Search is biggest volume but average for bounce and mediocre for clicks.
    - Social is poor quality traffic with high bounce, very low bookmaker clicks, it's just "flighty" non-gambling traffic. (football fans?)

Basically the Search and Social channels are unqualified sources of raw traffic - I'd hate to make a living on their click rates (less than 1%) - while Direct and Referral seem to be better conversion quality.

I guess with some thought it's not too much of a surprise as a Referral is someone already interested in sports / casino / poker gambling as they've come from another site, while a Direct visit has taken the time to bookmark or type in the site name.

A good visitor from Search or Social also possibly becomes a regular visitor via Direct if I am doing my job right with captivating content.

This is probably a temporary trend though because of this particular deal. I expect Google to regain those shares sooner or later.
