Good and bad is kinda subjective when it comes to SEO. Will it help you? Yes. To what extent? Less than it used to, in my opinion, but it still might boost you up a bit. The degree of SEO boost? Only Google knows, the rest of us are just speculating based on what we've read and experienced.

It also depends on the reason you might decide going for Forum links. Hoping that forum links will help you rank for a keyword by themselves might be a little too ambitious. Some people might be going for forum links just to give some diversity to their link profile and make it more natural.

Also, spamming forums just to try and get link benefit can get you banned, and if the forum sends data to the Stop Forum Spam database, it can also get your username, ip address and email details banned from setting up new accounts at forums and blogs in all industries all over the world (if they also do a datacheck with new account signups)

Nowadays most of the SEO gurus deny forum posts, but in my opinion they are damn good to get both relevant traffic and even boost in Google, despite being no-follow links usually. However it must be relevant forum, and good post, not mindless spam.

5 links from 5 good different websites are certainly worth more than 5 links from a single good website.

But if you've read this thread carefully, you should already know that links from forums or blog comments have low value.

Are 5 low value links from 5 different sources worth more than 5 low value links from a single source? I would say yes... but anyway it remains low value backlinks!

Well, there's no one answer, it all depends really. If you only rely on forum backlinks to increase your authority, not really. However, if you are trying to get some forum links to diversify your link profile and make it look as natural as possible while also leveraging all other backlink opportunities, then yes. The extent to which forum backlinks pass SEO juice, nobody can tell you for sure really.

You have to get out of the linking that all links are for search engine reasons. For example, a link on your signature on this website may not have a massive impact on rankings but it can drive related traffic from this forum.

Depends on the goal that you want to achieve, if it's to use forum links to rank a site then no, if it's to diversify your link profile then - yes, however links should be from forum topics that are relevant to the page you're linking to, and don't go overboard, make sure those links are less than 5%~ of your link profile. Make sure your responses provide value to the topic as well, otherwise it's spam.

Spamming forums are more likely to hurt your site. At least thats my experience.
