    I heard from Gary again....

Pat is now finally out of hospital but not home yet.

She is in a treatment facility where she is getting breathing treatments and observation in hopes that her breathing will continue to improve.

Gary is hopeful that she might actually get to go home next weekend, and I did ask him to keep me updated and to let me know as soon as he knows what day she is scheduled to go home.

She sent word that she misses everyone here and over at GAP immensely and wishes everyone well and she will be sure to stop in and say hi as soon as is possible.

That's great to hear! My thoughts are much with Gary too - often the care giver suffers more than the sick person. And yes, spending countless hours watching a sleeping person in the hospital qualifies as care giving, and it is very, very hard to cope with. My husband recently spent 5 weeks in the hospital undergoing a series of serious operations for cancer and complications and he doesn't remember much of it, he was in La-La land. On the other hand, I was a complete wreck and remember every scary minute of it.

I hope Pat goes home asap, while the responsibility increases then for Gary, just being home together is a huge relief. And one heals much, much faster at home.

That's very true. A care giver will have the feeling of absolute helplessness, watching continuosly a person suffering without being able to help. I know it from my own experience while I was very young.

    New Information

I have actually talked to both Gary and Pat today......

It turns out that since she has improved so much, and also since the doctors removed the trach a bit sooner than planned, she will be released tomorrow and is being sent home.

This is really great news and I will now say that this is actually unexpected....

She is in really good spirits and is getting a bit stronger all the time, she will have to stay on oxygen for some time but that is something that she has done for a little over 3 years so she is used to it.

If she can behave and stay off the cigs, she may actually reach a point where the oxygen will not be needed.

She wanted me to be sure and express her gratitude for all the thoughts, prayers and well wishes that everyone has shown for her these past weeks.

I am not sure when she will be up to pop-in in here to say hello herself, but for the time being she wanted everyone to know she says hi....

Welcome back, Pat. Don't smoke, you have had a long weaning period. Also, oxygen is highly flammable. Good to see you are home - there's no place like home!!
