You're right. PNG is a better choice for all graphics, JPG is for photos. With PNG you can reduce the file size by eliminating unused colors and mapping only the colors that are actually used, and the results are incredible. Plus the image can be transparent.

GIMP is my weapon of choice as well.

Thanks for making that clearer Dan. I didn't realize the distinction between the two formats and why one was better than another other than my vague sense of "complexity" You've made it much more clear, ty!

Not real sure why anyone would want to use any image that is 200k-300k, but unless it is a really huge masthead, that is a bit out of line of almost any image on a page in my opinion.

Optimizilla the final image optimizer compress images in JPEG and PNG formats minimum possible size..

PNG it is. Don't forget to use long tail keywords for the images titles as well!

Hahaha.. This is why I firstly decided to search online to see if such a tool was available.. I had to reduce tons of .png's.. I found it and boy was I glad.. Good lesson for next time, always check to see if there is some sort of tool online that already does what it is you need to do next..

The first thing to do is to check which images are too heavy on the site page. Then cancel that images from media directory and reupload again from Pc resized and optimized. If you use a Mac you can use the free tool image otimize downloadable from apple store.
