Thw show must go on...
Triple7 (25 December 2017)
Just a main couple of bookies, still probably makes me some class of obsessive though
The show must go on. I check stats and I do some work in the time between and after going to the church and eating.
Every day. It is an obsession. It's also how we stay on top of the comings and goings of our business (and minimize the chances one of our partners screws us over).

i check about 5 times daily, xmas included
I check a lot less now than I used to.
I think I realised I was kind of obsessed with it and that it was adding nothing to my life or my business!
I now check a couple of main accounts daily and the rest once a week-ish, some of them once a month.
I've tried both methods. I find that when I'm making a lot of changes to a site or a program that I tend to err more towards checking multiple times a day to see how the recent adjustments are playing out.
OTOH, I agree with Jim insofar as checking too much can be detrimental. Distracting from other tasks that need attention!

My way was:
useless obsessive checking of livescore (as a bettor) -> useless obsessive checking of Google Analytics [and GA real time] as webmaster beginner -> useless obsessive checking of affiliate stats -> useless obsessive checking of price of bitcoin -> now added useless obsessive checking of prices of all alts -> useless obsessive checking of mempool in expectation of crash of btc and whole crypto scene
I am really curious what comes next. But I would like to get rid of it. Everything got much worse after I finally started to use mobile phone like 2 years ago.

Wow. that's extreme. Have to ask - If you expect BTC to crush, why you don't just cashout all or most?

I absolutely do not expect it to crush if we speak in terms of probability.
But I see just 2 scenarios for btc and cryptos now:
I see btc to go up a lot with higher degree of probability and higher target than I see bear market and bottom. It varies now a lot, it can be 90% or 98%. The variable I am looking at most now is really mempool and advance in Layer2 solution for bitcoin. I want to see whether bitcoin is hitting hard or soft limit. In other words whether at least the 3 digit payments will be economically feasible through bitcoin in 2018 and before Lightning network hopefully comes. (That said I see a possibility that bitcoin can survive even with fees 100+ USD, but then things will be very different and it would trigger much more complex of scenarios).
Then there is the 2-10% probability of crush. The higher bitcoin and crypto go and the faster is the pace, the higher is the probability of the crush. The higher are mempool lows, then again the higher is probability of the crush.
Another thing I consider is if bitcoin crashes, then with high probability crash all or most altcoins and even those are otherwise promising to solve scalability issues.
So the conclusions are:
- I hedge into alts just gently, because if the bitcoin crash comes, then altinvestments crash as well.
- I do not cash out yet, because I think there is still a plenty of space for institutional investors. I am trying as much information from people from oldschool investment bankers and such as much as possible. I think the big money still have to come yet. But everything is about probabilities.
- Also if I cash out just a small amount, the money is extreme even for bank that knows me. That is why I fly now to Europe to see how they can handle it a prepare everything.
- Last reason is ideological. I do not like fiat. I trust the old economy less than to Dogecoin. I really fear to buy fiat and being a hostage of crazy central bankers. I am all the time investing as much as I can into projects I believe in. It worked for me for many years. Yes, it is walking through narrow path. But I have more than enough money for myself, so what should I do with the rest? I feel I should invest it into something that has future. But really, what has the future nowadays?
TL;DR everything is about probabilities. The best way to avoid a disaster is just to be careful and look even for black swans.
If you talk to God, you are praying; If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.
If bitcoin crashes (and again I am not telling it will), then it is possible it might never recover. I did not see this scenario before and I argued about it even on this forum with Gooner for example under different circumstances (or under circumstances that I felt differently). If bitcoin crashes (and AGAIN, we speak about very low probability I bet), then the crypto market will go 10-100x down and relative prices between coins will probably change in extreme level. The highest valuation then will be coins far from BTC. So I would not bet on BCH, LTC. I would not bet maybe on POW coins at all. And I would be careful about blockchain currencies. But this is a nightmare scenario.
Time to check the mempool again..
