Hosting and SMF

I am posting this in the public in case their is any member who can help me out. GoDaddy lets users download and install SMF right from their site. MySQL database and everything is setup automatically for you.

I am having problems with it and am wondering if there are any other necesary steps that need to be done. I have posted over at SMF and the reply I got was sometimes there are problems with GoDaddy, which is why I am here for help. To see if anyone else has had this issue and knew a way to fix it.

I understand for forumd Vbulliten is the way to go, but cash flow is almost non exsistant (paid for ads)so that's not happening any time soon.

If anyone knows something or can guide me I would appreciate it. Yes I tried phpbb but I am lacking tech experience to figure that one out

phpbb is pretty damn easy. There are more support forums for it than SMF and the security level, mods and general upgrades are IMHO far better than SMF.

Personally I'd opt for phpbb.

There is also mods that make the URL's friendly in phpbb.

In so far as SMF I had hassles getting that to work. The learning curve for that SMF imo far out weights the simplicity of phpbb. I'm just saying SMF is not that easy...

By your post I'm going to guess that Godaddy installed SMF via fantasico or some type of automated script set-up, is that right?

I hardly ever use these things, too many issue can arise.

However, now that it's done...Before you trash the install, double check that GoDaddy supports what is required to run SMF, as below:

Any webserver that supports PHP properly, such as Apache or Internet Information Services (IIS).

PHP 4.1.0 or higher. The following are required to be set correctly in php.ini:

* the engine directive must be On.
* the magic_quotes_sybase directive must be set to Off.
* the session.save_path directive must be set to a valid directory, or empty.
* the file_uploads directive must be On.
* the upload_tmp_dir must be set to a valid directory, or empty.


MySQL 3.23.28 or higher.

* at least 500 kilobytes of storage space in the database, although more is highly recommended.
* at least the following privileges: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, ALTER, and INDEX.
* during installation and conversion, the CREATE and DROP privileges.


About six megabytes of storage space on the web server (more for attachments!).


Check your config file (not sure where this is on SMF) could be located Admin folder or maybe on the root folder that contains your forum.

If your on a Unix box make sure that ALL Chmod permissions are set-up properly.

As SMF does provide an install operation, I'd say if you can't get it going, then trash the entire install.

I'd then upload everything manually via FTP and use the install program that come with SMF & not the Godaddy install version.

If all else fails and you still can't get it going...I'd pay someone to install it for you.

Ya I have unistalled and redid the entire database for it about 4 times now. Godaddy is useless when it comes to tech support. LOL I phoned in and at least the rep was honest when saying"We are mainly for sales support"

I am going to try doing it once more for either SMF or PHP. I am a newb when it comes to this stuff.
