Mayday as they call it.

We all see how it favors large brands and massive websites all over the industry.

This has got to be turning off new seo's.

It is not impossible to get high quality links fast so you can compete with the big sites - but wont google drop you for doing it too fast?

It is not impossible to mimic a major authority site but is it cost effective? Wont they continue to grow while you are trying to catch them?

It seems like it is nearly impossible to start from scratch and grab any of the converting keywords.

Am I wrong? How?

In January of this year my main site grabbed a large number of popular keywords in google searches as well as yahoo and others. keep this in mind. The big sites will always do well for big keywords however with a little research you can find keywords that although not as popular, are still searched for often. By often I mean thousands of times compared to millions for the main keywords like poker.

As an example you may never get to the top of the charts with "no deposit bonus" but you could have the top spot with " no deposit slot Africa " which still gets a large amount of hits.

I spend 12 hours a day on this seo stuff and although the big sites will get most of the traffic, a little hard work will get you the traffic you need to make a good living.

Right but isnt that considered a long tail keyword? Even the smaller keywords you are talking about can only be achived through a sub url of an authority site - and not a mini site like before.

How do we know that google will not block out even the smaller keywords and turn them over to larger sites soon. I mean why wouldnt that be next? I see what google is trying to do. It seems like it is only a matter of time before google does this to all keywords.

The long tail keyword fear is a myth in my opinion. Google doesn't penalize those kinds of keywords like some may think. Why would they? Like I said Google is not going to stop rewarding the big sites. After all they have done the work and Google is going to reward them. but that doesn't mean you cant get your piece of pie as well. You just get a smaller piece.

It's not impossible to rank for long tails any more in fact I know a lot of "niche" sites that haven't had many problems with the may day update at all, maybe people need to be looking at their SEO methodology more than worrying about the big companies having the advantage.

Of course they have an advantage, but they've always had an advantage over smaller less well known competeters anyway what's really changed here? After all they are the people who get the most natural links, who have the drop when it comes to industry news and therefore get the best content and so on. And lets not even get started on budgets.

If I had a penny for every time I've heard people compain about an algorithm change screwing them over I wouldn't be peddling SEO any more, people just need to learn how to most effectively beat the new system, then the algorithm will change and we'll start again, it's how SEO always has been and always will be.

Anybody who is put off by SEO changing needs to look at other marketing methods as this one clearly isn't for them.

So with this new algo - which is totally favoring big brands - what is the suggestion for a new seo site?

In all honesty I haven't changed much of what I'e done for clients and I've not had any problems. And we offer a guarantee so if anything did go wrong I'd be having some serious problems right about now :P

But, if you want any advice personally feel free to PM me and I'll take a look at what you're doing and give you some help, no charge of course.

Best thing I could suggest to somebody new who wasn't quite sure would be to outscource.

There is the other factor of building your online brand awareness, I'd been saying this to clients for quite some time prior to the update as it was quite well documented that the brand favouring update was coming.

But in all honesty something which I have noticed since the update that you mentioned is that social media has become more important.... again... and that quite simply you need to appear more legitimate with what you do, for most people it's not about changing what you're doing more about how you're doing it if that makes sense.
