    Hi forum,

Mahjong is a tile game of Chinese origin. Mah jong was invented there in the mid-1800’s, but Mahjong has its roots in older games. read more Use Google

Indeed, there are over 30,000 mahjong clubs in Japan, over half of them said to be owned by the yakuza – organized crime – and where the equivalent of the gross national...

I think this is a game that could actually have some potential. I know that lot of older people enjoy playing it and that is bit of a untapped market at the moment.

It's too bad the OP was really only intent on spamming his site with the above post. It could have opened up an interesting dialogue if he had been more sincere.

Well let's try to turn it into a serious discussion anyway eh?

    ----------------------

While Mahjong is hugely popular, and I'm sure that there is a lot of CASH bet in individual games (much like Backgammon) this has yet to translate into a good online gambling vertical yet.

There is the usual asian issue that the players are do NOT have good access to credit card facilities or e-wallet facilities.

There is the issue of an age barrier with many mahjong players likely to be 50+ and not really into the online world or computers in a big way.

And there is the experience issue in that unlike texas holdem where the beginnner quickly (and incorrectly) thinks that they have mastered the game - mahjong / Backgammon does not leave the learner under any illusions that they will be well beaten by a good player.

We've had a stab at Backgammon onsite (I'm a reasonable player) and created a couple of pages :
    http://www.goonersguide.com/betting_on_backgammon.html
    http://www.goonersguide.com/backgamm...re_review.html

But frankly the monthly revenue is tiny - and only a couple of hundred dollars a year. Lots of non-depositing signups - but the barriers to entry as listed above - stop people from trying.

Mahjong is like backgammon - a great game in itself - and often used as a gambling medium offline amoungst friends and associates and in clubs ... but neither game have really made the transition to the online world yet ...

... at least in my opinion.

    ----------------------------

    What's your opinion?

I don't really have an opinion about mahjong - never played it and know absolutely nothing about it.

I haven't promoted backgammon although I used to play. Maybe I should put a page or two on my new (not quite live) casino site and test the waters. It's a fairly popular game in Canada, although mostly with those in my age bracket.

Other than a little time, there's nothing to lose by giving it a shot. I imagine it should be fairly easy to rank for some decent backgammon related terms. Can you recommend a solid affiliate program in that vertical?

I totally agree the original poster had intention solely of link juice and nothing else!!

I am still tempted to delete the original message and let the discussion continue...

I have not tried anything with Mahjong but have dabbled in Backgammon with sad results...

You would be surprised how many people play mahjong - age is definitely not an issue.

And there is the experience issue in that unlike texas holdem where the beginnner quickly (and incorrectly) thinks that they have mastered the game - mahjong / Backgammon does not leave the learner under any illusions that they will be well beaten by a good player.
Might agree for backgammon, somewhat agree for mahjong but mahjong is essentially a form of rummy - and it shouldn't be too long before a player is reasonably competent at either game. Being a master doesn't guarantee you good tiles or lousy players, and you can't bluff - so while an experienced player may hold a slight advantage over someone less experienced, in the end there is not such a huge chasm between player levels as there is in poker.

Mahjong is like backgammon - a great game in itself - and often used as a gambling medium offline amoungst friends and associates and in clubs ... but neither game have really made the transition to the online world yet ...

Mahjong for money has not been successful in the western world, since most Western players play for enjoyment - and actually fit the age bracket you described above. Not much different than playing bridge or rummy - great way to pass the time.

In Greater China and Japan, mahjong continues to be a big money business, but not necessarily online due to all sorts of problems including payment processing and legal issues - but playing for "fun" is huge and the products available are very sophisticated.

Don't write off Mahjong just yet

Mahjong is much like rummy. A great way to enjoy a game of skill. Luck here isn't as prominent as other casino games as you have to do a lot of anticipation and thinking.
My family plays mahjong every now and then.

Fascinating ... some generically positive response.

Have ANY of you been promoting it online?
Have ANY of you reached a total of $1000 payout from it?

Please post if you have - and name which program.

( FWIW - I've yet to break $1000 with backgammon after three years - so I cannot recommend it as a vertical worth persuing ).

Thanks for the straightforward posts on you success (or lack of) backgammon...

I built a site dedicated to it, (haven't really pushed it much tho to be honest) and I was very disappointed with the results....

I still have the site up but haven't updated it much in quite a while....(would still do link exchanges with it if anyone is persuing the market) and if anyone has in fact done anything major with any skill gaming verticle I would love to see input here....

As far as playing tho I did enjoy playing at a few places while I was doing my initial testing etc...

Of the places that seemed to have withstood the test of time I would look at

    EGO
    Gammon Empire
    Prime Partners

I always liked the first 2 better than Prime although some do well with their poker product.

Party also has a backgammon product but I only did a link here or there for them since my results with the entire project was less than hoped for.

I gotta say, I highly doubt anyone's made $1000 promoting Mahjong to the western world... in the Chinese-language world it's entirely possible but I don't have enough knowledge of those programs or affiliates to say either way.

Those who get in now may well lead the way - but it remains to be seen whether or not it will become a worthwhile vertical to pursue. That being said, I am an avid supporter of Mahjong and would love to see it take off.

Interesting! Do you have any reports supporting your assessment? In case Mahjong has a chance in the US market as a revenue source, I would like to promote the game.
