Negative SEO

What is your opinion on Negative SEO?

I just came across a fiver gig that offered 67 000 backlinks to a site for Negative SEO purposes and there are already 18 gigs ordered!

Wow that just blew my mind up. Google has tried to clean up the mess of blog networks and spammy backlinks, but they released a much bigger and badder monster from the SEO closet.

According recent case studies on Negative SEO it seems it actually works at the moment.

The future is not bright unless Google fixes this. There is something positive in this Fiverr gig. It brings the attention to the problem so it doesn't get covered up and forgotten.

From what i picked up from several of the speakers at LAC, this sort of 'screw your competition rather than improve your service' mentality is fairly prevalent in the affiliate world.

And it's a lot easier than it used to be.

You have to remember with all the WMT warnings and entire chunks of the web being de-indexed people are getting all in a flutter.

I am still in the position that neither the guys offering Negative SEO nor the guys ordering it are the big problem. The big problem is that Google allowed this to happen. Why is Negative SEO not an issue at Bing and Yahoo?
Sometimes I wish that the Google,Yahoo and Bing get a equal market share so that the clients can benefit the most of it.

At the moment search engine results are all over the place which is good for Google because more people will tend to go for adwords -> Profit for big G.

Well I was talking at ionSearch recently and the negative SEO thing was quite big in terms of chatting, I'm actually running a couple of studies now, (on sites that I own that rank, but don't make enough cash to concern myself about).

I've actually tested it on some simple niches and found I could knock out double listings within 48hrs, figured that would get some quick results, as opposed to trying to knock out an entire site.

Not posting exactly how it was done, but if anyone wants to hit me up or wait till I'm finished with my study then great.

On another note it does seem to be working. I'm trying to get myself a warning although for those that a one off example.

Interesting though the bottom line is that its not easy protecting a site against negative SEO attacks unless the site is already well established with authority and lots of very good backlinks.

The best way to protect yourself, don't make yourself an easy target, it's much easier to tip someone over the edge than kill them from scratch.

How would you suggest doing that. Any non authority, long established site can be an easy target at the moment I think.

I guess you mean having only quality backlinks from other trustworthy and authority sites?

well to be honest if you're running a new website you may be a little buggered, but not just high quality authority links, think social, build up a good social presence and that will cover your arse a little.

Secondly just don't buy any shite it's like painting a target on your back,

Watch link exchanges and keep your main pages clean.

But to be honest what I was getting at was not making it worse for yourself by buying a load of crap and making it easy for someone to tip you over the edge.

I think we'll see a lot of that going forward, webmasters with dodgy profiles getting more dumped on them by there competitors

I have someone running a negative SEO campaign on my site right now (not the first time it has happened either).

Here is a little video from Matt Cutts the head of google's web spam team...
He is talking about scrapers.. but I know for a fact that the same holds true for sites that are under xrummer type of attacks... lol

The title of the Video is "CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM SCRAPERS".

Negative seo means its a kind of reverse of seo which makes you the website ranking low.

According to the Google's Algorithm taking aggressive back links are counted as spam.

I think negative SEO does not exist. If some can make too many links of the other site then he or she may be able to down the other site but mostly Google have a very algorithm system.

I suggest you educate yourself mate! Neg SEO is very real. If you feel google serps have been improved for the better with the latest penguin updates - your obviously out of touch with reality. NO offense

This thread has really been targeted by xrummer bots.

I count three so far.

Just a suggestion Michael, but you might want to try adding a hidden field (a field that only a bot can see) with questions that have no correct answer on your sign up form.
I find that works well to stop these spamming ass holes.
