Default Poll: Should there be a links section added

Link exchanges and link sales are important parts of our industry and we want the forum to be able to effectively support these types of collaborations among community members.

One issue that has arisen is that without a designated public forum for link deals, they've become scattered across other sections, creating both usability and moderation challenges. The link exchange threads are often drowning out other valuable discussions. I would like to open a public section forum just for link deals. It will clean up the SEO forum and give the moderation team a place to put the various link requests.

The addition of this new public forum would be in addition to the existing private link sections.

What are your thoughts to having a public section just for links?

I think seperating it from SEO will keep (or should help keep ) it clean

I didn't vote since I would ban 99% of the link spammers rather than tolerate them or give them a forum for the purpose but I will make some suggestions....

If you're going to create a public link exchange forum, you need to ensure there are rules and the rules are followed.

    1. No hijacking
    2. No spamming multiple threads
    3. Start your own thread or respond directly (as specified within the thread) to someone else's thread.... kinda related to hijacking

And it would be really cool if we encouraged those who are only here to link spam to go somewhere else. Anthony and Rick have a pretty good idea of the members I'm referring to.

In order not to make life easier for the spammers and hijackers, as pointed out by Terry, it might be a good idea to allow each member only one thread in the link exchange forum, thus making controlling easier. Also the points mentioned by Terry can be included as users guide in that forum.

This should not have been a public vote honestly, since I know there are a number of members that would vote against even allowing public exchasnge threads....and the fact that there are spam and hijack issues in LE threads is ONLY an issue in the public threads and never in the private ones....

I would love to see a list of webmasters who are actively buying links. Course I would guess not many of them are going to be eager to make a public notice of it.

A couple comments on this thread from my perspective. It is precisely because there are spam and hijack issues in the public forums that I suggested to Anthony that the discussion on this topic should be a public one. The real purpose of this thread is to get feedback and food for thought for us on an approach to address the issue. Pesonally, while I look most heavily to the opinions of private members here, I value the opinion of sponsor and public members very much as well in areas that relate to the public areas of the website.

Anthony and Steven came to me supporting a change like the one suggested here, and after some discussion internally I decided that it was important to get community feedback. In terms of opinions of public versus private members, that is easy enough for us to look at if it seems to be important in making sense of the guidance being provided since vBulletin does allow moderators to look at who voted for which options in a poll.

Fundamentally, I think Anthony is after a practical approach to guide folks in the right direction. And my personal sense is that providing a channel with reasonable controls will likely work better than prohibition. Where have I heard that before? Regulation being better than prohibition, what a novel idea to float in a group of gambling webmasters.

However, you are absolutly right, Rick, that there are a whole raft of issues, and it is important that we look at this from all perspectives in order to handle the situation in the best possible fashion. I think we can all agree that the current situation is a mess, and that some sort of regulation of what is allowed and some sort of prohibition of activities that fall outside of agreed guidelines is necessary. So Anthony's suggestion, by itself, certainly cannot be the whole solution.

Well this is some of what I have been talking about for a long time, but I do see your point Michael.

We do need to do something about it or Terry will likely convince me over to his camp and it would be much easier to swing the vote....

Part of that statement is meant as "tounge-in-cheek" with a slight bity of truth thrown in.....lol

It would be helpful for all if those who vote NO or MAYBE would also make some comments about their thoughts in this thread.

I voted No only because I prefer to do link exchanges with private members. But if you open a public forum than it won't be a big problem for me.

I didn't vote because I would vote "Don't care" at all.

I access the forum posts using the new posts facility which simply lists all new posts from all forums in a descending list and so the actual location of link threads makes no difference to me.

I simply skip over threads that I don't want to read.

I would suggest providing guidance in making thread titles more explanatory for links - but usually I can tell it's a link thread and simply ignore it.

I think one reason for creating a separate forum for link exchange is to make the SEO forum more interesting for those who want to discuss other SEO issues than link exchange. At the same time, it would also make life easier for those who are interested mainly in link exchange.

I voted 'yes' because I think it is easier (and better) to contain such public link exchange threads in one place, rather than try to police them or control them everywhere else on the forum. It is easy then, if a link exchange thread/post pops up elsewhere the admins just move it to the new forum (or delete it with a note to only use the link exchange forum).

This should be better for both those who are OK with such public link exchanges here (they can find the place to do that easier) and also those who won't use such a facility (easier for them to avoid it). Thus, although I won't use this forum should it be created, I think it should be created for anyone who does want to use it.

Also (off topic!), since I have finally got a reply box to type in, I should say that I am having huge problems even reading the forums at the moment, let alone posting in them - hence my post rate being almost zero at the moment. It doesn't appear to be a GPWA problem as I see lots of other threads and stuff being posted in by everyone else. But also it is the only website I am having trouble with at the moment so isn't a general net problem with my ISP.

Voted not sure. I think it is a good idea for this forum to have a dedicated section for such activity. But I would it would be more good if we can have it members only so only members of the forum could view opportunities and respond.
