And it says "Of course, if you're kind of-- if these links do not pass PageRank, if they have the nofollow attached to it or rel="sponsored" attached to it, then that can be fine. That's essentially a way of advertising your website. It doesn't pass any value to your website. But it still helps users to find your content and kind of indirectly helps to promote your content and your website. So maybe that helps a little bit."

So the question is, does it mean that backlinks rel="sponsored" are not important for SEO at all? What do you think?

I changed some on my websites. I think it is the same as nofollow for webmasters, but it is useful for Google data mining (like they will know even more which domains are being used for marketing, because webmasters flag those for free). Just my impression. I will keep using nofollow for everything.

use rel="sponsored" and you are essentially telling Google you may be/are taking sponsored content, and therefore telling them you (might) sell links in that content.

I'd suggest a potential shot in the foot, unless anyone can put a better light on it.

Yes that is really how it has to be used. But I did not see nor benefits or penalties when using instead of nofollow. Probably good to use on new affiliate materials, but no need to change on old. At least that is what I will do.

Your understanding of how it is supposed to be used is similar to mine. However, we have not adopted any of the new changes and only utilize nofollow or no tag at all.

I assume you would have said as much if so, but in case you did not, I would like to know if you noticed any changes in your metrics/rankings/traffic/etc when you made the change to swap over affiliate referral links from nofollow to sponsored?

I've probably only done 50-75% of the affiliate links as rel="sponsored" so far, just doing them as I work through them in daily activities.

I don't expect anything to change much - it's hardly groundbreaking to go from nofllow to sponsored - although perhaps it does signal that my site is active / updated / using current markup? Traffic has not changed markedly.

I don't monitor metrics and rankings.

I do not understand what do you mean by "hurt backling profile". Indeed an ad link out, that is not marked somehow and looks like a normal link, can hurt your SERP/domain. If it really will, that idk.

My personal opinion as affiliate website SEO manger to avoid using sponsored links to show google that my casino reviews are good and lots of websites find them an attractive and trusted source to get new info. So they refer to these articles because of great content.
