    Default Subdomain or new folder?

    Hi

I'm thinking about setting up and adding a Wordpress blog containing news articles to my static portal site.

I'm a little confused about how best to do this?

Would you recommend setting up a sub-domain as follows:

    news.domainname.com

or would it be best to just create a new folder and submit posts to this directory:

    domainname.com/news

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

It depends on how you will set up your blog and contents. If you are going to use it as a different entity from your main domain then go for a subdomain otherwise go for sub folder.

There was an SEOmoz whiteboard Friday vid a few months ago (I can't find it now) that suggested from a purely SEO viewpoint a (sub) folder is better than a subdomain. The idea is that any links that the blog gets will add to the link juice directed at the main root domain. Whereas if you put the blog on a subdomain then that link juice gets distributed between the subdomains somewhat (i.e. blog links add to the 'pr' of the blog.domain.com, rather than the main www.domain.com)

Also the folder gives you a chance to slip in a few extra keywords without being spammy about it if rather than just 'news' you call the folder 'onlinewidgetnews' (for instance, if your site was about widgets).

I have no idea how good those suggestions were but they made sense to me!

Yes that makes sense. Some of those whiteboard videos are great. Looks like I'll go with a sub folder. Makes sense to also target the keyword in the folder name. Thanks for the suggestion.
