1. Best seo practice is to get at least one of your primary keywords in domain or sub domain name of your website.You can use hyphens to separate multiple keywords.For example seo-firm.
2. Write Your Meta Description tag attractive containing keywords because it will appear on the search engine result pages.
3. Use text for navigation menu instead of using images or Java scripts.
4. Submit your website only once to google, Yahoo, AltaVista and other search engines and open directory.
5. If your website contents changes very often then provide visitor with Newsletter and RSS feed.
6. Write articles on website related to yours having higher page ranking and leave your websites link.

#2 makes sense as a Call To Action and to improve clickthru, but Google doesn't actuallly count the META Description tag in its ranking factors so it won't help ranking per sé. That said, it's not all about Google.

#3 - I believe that an image wth ALT tag and if linked, title tag in the href, is equally as useful, if not better for gaining Site Links in SERPS if its a linked image to a directory or important page on the site. Also, Google crawls javascript links, but whether text is better, not sure.
