Default Update article or create new?

Like many of you, I write plenty of slot reviews. Very often I'll write a coming soon article about a specific game and list everything I know.

When the slot is finally released I usually create a new article with the actual review.

But readin Moz guides, it seems it's not a good thing to use the same keyword on multiple pages. Should I instead just edit the old article, maintain the url and bump it up to first page?

    Thank you

Merge into one fresh article and redirect one (or both ) old URL's this will give you the biggest benefit and overcome keyword cannibalization

Ok, this sounds interesting. Keyword cannibalizations is exactly what Im trying to avoid. But since Im not all that high tech, could you maybe explain a little more in detail how to go about what you suggested? By merge, you mean to copy the text from the "news" article to the "review" article? Then redirect the news article to the review article? This is a major noob question, but how do I redirect? Can it be done in wordpress?

Agreed. Try to merge the articles, and redirect one to the other (most likely the news post to the "Landing page").

There is no right or wrong answer here depends on the strategy u adopt...

longer articles seem to be performing better at the moment.. logically speaking they are also better as they make it easier to dilute your ratios

If you have cannbalisation issues you should either combine and redirect or unoptimize the article you don't want to rank...

I always prefer to keep supporting content to increase link entry points but that's for another day..

I usually simply update the article after the slot is launched. although the redirect suggestion sounds nice - just not that techy.

We usually update the articles, the old URL already indexed works fine, and then maybe some promotion of the update of the article.

We also do something like compilations, or "definitive guides" and there we put a link list with date of last update.

If you decide to write new articles, you can also try using backlinks to connect the new materials to the old/previous versions. That way, you record history and the older articles can be used for reference.

I would update the original article. I mean if it completely makes sense both in terms of content and site structure to do a new page, I'd say you'd be fine but more often than not, usually good to update existing pages.

I always prefer to stick to my initial post/article. Adding cıntent or updating it, give great ranking boosts. But above all, the article should be useful to the readers. No need to mention that!

If you have something new for readers than create new article is best option. And if you have more news to already published article than update that article is best way.

    it's simple ..

I could show you the coding to use for a redirect, but instead (and because your a noob), you can use a WP plugin to do it for you.

    Here's a couple of suggestions:
    ---
Do the right thing, even when no one is looking. It's called integrity.

Purely from a SEO results perspective the best solution.

    1. Install "Tao Content Scheduler"
    2. Go through all of your old content, and schedule the oldest post to schedule update today, the next oldest tomorrow and so on
    3. do a meaningful update of the content and leave to schedule update

Using the above steps, WordPress will over hundredths of a second (depending on your server)

    Delete the original post
Sitemap removes the old indexed post
Search console triggers removal of indexed content
Now WordPress will post a new post, same URL structure, fresh content
re-update sitemap and ping search console
Fresh article appears in index but with the added boost/authority of fresh content

Try it yourself, this can be scaled with a VA and a job spec.

With that method, you will have 404's from the cache (this will clear) and if per chance you had external links pointing to those posts, they will show 404's and you may lose that incoming link benefit.

Updating the original article is a good option because Google loves evergreen pages that are frequently updated and favour high volume content. However, if you are looking to discuss new topics then it is more favourable to start a new page so it can target new focus keywords.
