    Default Update Coming?

Anyone else notice a huge increase in your sites getting crawled by Google lately? It seems all my sites have seen about a 200%-300% increase in crawl stats in the last few days. In the past when I noticed this increase an update always seemed to take place in the next few days. Has anyone heard of an update coming?

No I have not seen a spike in googlebot crawls.
Solid between 4K to 8K per day.

any basis for trying to scare the **** out of him? because i've been doing this for years and never heard of this 'notorious bot spike' that is going to punish him

just checked my stats and seen nothing but have seen serps changes. Travis, i wouldn't worry about it until you see something more than just a rise in crawling, that could be for many reasons

It's been documented a lot, I actually think you get a high crawl rate before any ranking change positive or negative, I have always noticed a high crawl rate before my rankings were adjusted sometimes losing 500 visitors per day.. or gaining 500. It could be a coincidence but he looked like he needed someone to play devils advocate https://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4448398.htm here is an old thread.. there are plenty of them either way 200-300% increase in crawl is not a lot.. I can have 1000 crawled one day then 4000 the next which is 300%.. if it was higher then I would worry

I've seen crawl rate spikes followed by a drop but invariably within a few days to a week everything settles back to normal. No point worrying until something major happens.

Silly question maybe - how do you know when you've had loads of Goolgebot crawls?

yes google change anything..but i dont capture the crawl bot. A lot of my keywords go up and i have more visitors.

Jim,you can check in here https://www.google.com/webmasters/ or with cloudflare or with analytics tools.

You can track the bot like a normal visitor.

    regards

Nothing unusual for me either, last big spike was on the 12th December although that didn't result in any noticeable changes to Serps positions so not sure I'd associate one with the other myself.

    Two big spikes for me.

    19th Jan 2016 -> around + 300% --> no major changes in rankings
04th Feb 2016 -> aroung + 200% --> we will see in the next few days

However, when I had spikes I usually got rankings up or down.

The easiest way is to go to Google webmaster tools .. choose the website and then look under Crawl -> Crawl Stats.
They have a 90 day graph of # crawls, KB used, and response times.

Feb 2nd: I had a 500% increase in my google crawl stats
Feb 5th: Significant drop in google traffic
Feb 7th: Everything is back to normal

One possible explanation is that I was been adding a lot of content to the site a few days before the crawl stats spiked.

btw, google said increases in crawl rate DO NOT indicate an algo update https://www.seroundtable.com/google-...yth-21616.html

Yeah, those crawl stats make me nervous quite really often, the last week it was like a roller coaster ride. But as thebookiesoffers mentioned, it shouldn't be related to algo updates, however as a webmaster there is always a strange feeling!

Still seeing a lot of fluctuations which suggests to me something's imminent. I keep an eye on a friend's site in a completely different sector (estate agency) and the changes on those SERPs are massive - literally from position 1 to mid page 1 to oblivion from day to day...

How would you rate your friends SEO tactics? Is he using some kind of black hat seo? A friend of mine lost all his rankings in the last 6 months, but topic was credit and he did a lot of unnatural backlink building
