Cool Using Article Submissions and RSS Feeds to Explode Your Links & Avoiding Duplicates

I spent a bit of time writing this for an SEO forum I Moderate in response to a poster and though it worthy to post here as well.

    Its about how to use article submissions and RSS Aggregators to build links to your site - massively; and also how to avoid duplication penalties and assure that you get credit for your own work and get it before some dimwit scrapes your site and get your work indexed on his site before you, thereby making your hard work worthless;

Wanna Hea it? Hea it go!

Tip 1. Using Articles correctly to build links

First off let me clear up the duplication issue before its asked by those that aren't completely clear on it.

Duplication penalties are typically derived from one website publish another website's content, usually word-for-word.

Different language translations (if they do not exist in any index) can be done but I do not condone plagiarising content and I haven't found a good translation tool that does it in a way that wouldn't read terribly - especially in certain languages - and I deal in hundreds of languages and dialects. Get a real person to translate if you choose this route.

Duplication penalties can be drawn from copying an article from ezines or one of many other article submission directories and its not actually A PENALTY, its a non-index issue, so the page will never show in the results anyhow, so why waste your time?

The best way to prevent someone scraping your site and republishing your content is to get it indexed first. Its important to do this because nothing is worse that spending your time writing and article and having some bonehead copy it and get it indexed before you site gets crawled and now they essentially become the author. Believe I know.

    My process for preventing this from happening is this;
    1. Write the article
    2. Post the article and take note of the URL
    3. Push to get it indexed - I do this with the 6 or 7 Social Media buttons you can select to be shown in my Google toolbar in my Firefox browser. Although there are tools like Onlywire and Social Media Poster that will automate this, but it takes me about 15 seconds to post in Digg, Delicious, Reddit, Stumbleupon Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Blogger manually so I do it manually.
    4. Manually submit the URL through Google, Yahoo and MSN - again, I bookmark all in one tab and 'open all' in FF at once and it takes another 10 seconds.
    5. The I run Xenu and create a new automated sitemap and if you set it up it will also auto-post it to your site via FTP.
    6. Lastly I upload it into an article writer like Article Wizard that properly formats everything and allows you to add SEO elements like tags, backtracks and header tags automatically, and then I submit it through accounts that I already have setup for submitting original articles.

**Its important that you have a few links to your own site! I always add 3 and make each a different, but relevant, keyword and link them back to separate pages that are associated with the keyword. I also add a link to a top 3 non-competing site or WIKIPEDIA if there isn't a non-competitor site available.

You might even send a link to a few friends and ask the to FAV it at their favorite bookmark site (Digg it or Stumble it)

One more thing you might do if you really want to assure you get the credit before that nasty scraper man is to recreate your xml sitemap (there are many free tools including Google Webmaster Central) and manually submit it.

Believe it or no I do everything you see above in under 10 minutes.

When most articles are (300-1500) words take hours to write - 10 minutes is nothing.

Bonus Tip - If you are short on time you can always use ezines or other various free article directories to find a good article. The catch is you have to leave the original links in the article, but hey that's okay with me.

    BONUS TIP #2
    - When I submit articles to article directories I always submit it in html AND text/word individually, then create a spreadsheet with column for 1. Do they publish live links? 2. How many links? 3. Do they convert raw HTML and so on. Some will not publish links from a Word doc but the will from raw html because of a glitch.

Additionally, If the publish raw html you are assured of getting live links on the site scrapers website even if he codes it to remove links.

Then you can take the article and get probably the best program I have found out there (and I have tried them ALL) called The Best Spinner and spin up to 1000 different variations of the same article. The program works seemlessly and tells you the % of uniqueness from the original article. It will also post directly to multiple blogs and even submits it to the database that other Spinners can access thereby republishing your links on their sites for free. It also has an integrated Copyscape tool that allows you to put an API in (which Copyscape gives you - and all at a nominal fee) and will automatically check for duplication - BRILLIANT!!

NOTE - spinning others articles may or not be an acceptable practice on some directories so be sure to check first.

Tip 2. Using RSS feeds to build links

Much like the knobhead site scraper that steals your content guy I described in Tip #51, we are going to use his tactics against him to benefit your site!

Blackhats have been scraping content since 96. Its an easy way to build and populate massive websites, and until the last few years wasn't a penaised practice. Even now millions do it without drawing a penalty, and some do, but they just don't care.

So we are going to add an RSS feed to your site for them to suck up and republish your links.

You see, most of these characters are lazy, which is why they do it this way to being with, and they don't spend the time to remove links.

They will setup a php program to scrape your RSS feed for new content and the automatically create a page on their site/sites and move on to the next victim.

The other handy thing to do is to LET them scrape it! Oui? Eh? WTF?

    Yea, let em.

Open a Feedburner account and publish your RSS feeds. Feedburner automatically syndicates it across RRS aggregators and other people scrape the content and republish it and you sit back and watch your back links explode.

    Here are some other places to submit through;

Well RSS is a really great way to produce more links in a really short time. Although, I think there are still issues about RSS and duplicate content... is there?

Don't confuse the two - claiming your content as I outlined above will prevent non-indexing (there is no PENALTY per se - it just won't show in the results)

RSS feeds are pull from your site and via RSS Aggregators. THEY pull from YOUR site, so you are automatically the originator. Additionally, the point behind the RSS feed is to get others to republish YOUR content with YOUR links.

This is what google says about rss feeds and duplicate content:

Syndicate carefully: If you syndicate your content on other sites, Google will always show the version we think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you'd prefer. However, it is helpful to ensure that each site on which your content is syndicated includes a link back to your original article. You can also ask those who use your syndicated material to use the noindex meta tag to prevent search engines from indexing their version of the content.

That is if you syndicated your feed properly. What if the person using RSS feeds don't know about this. Let's say they still make their feeds crawlable by spiders, what will happen?

The page won't be in the SERPs - but any links on it will still be seen and counted, and that's it.

    Hey Gary,

Awesome post as always . A few questions if you don't mind clarifying...

    1. When you say "top 3 non-competing site or wikipedia" is this to say having an authority site link, gives your article more credit in google's eyes, i.e link to gambleaware (or any gambling authority site). In that case would an affiliate link to an authority site work? Or does that completely devalue it?

    2. You say use ezine to find original article, with someone else's links having to be intact to publish to your site. If you do this are you saying you can still get valuable traffic to your site with content that is not your own, and links that are not your own?

    3. Article Spinning is surely a pet hate of google? Surely they can detect a spun article better than copyscape can? Unless this article software really does make it appear unique in google's eyes.

    4. If you outsource your article writing how do you know if its unique, if spun articles still pass copyscape tests?

Thanks for the great post, v helpful.

    Phil

    Post Re:

Some article submission and PR web sites allow people to subscribe to specific categories related to their web site as RSS feeds. If a website subscribes to the RSS feed for the category that you have submitted your article to, your article and back link will not only show up on the website that you have submitted to, it will also automatically appear on all of the websites that subscribe to the RSS feed of that category.

Gary, are you suggesting we publish the entire article in the RSS instead of a summary?

    Hi Phil,

Sorry I am just getting to these.

    1. When you say "top 3 non-competing site or wikipedia" is this to say having an authority site link, gives your article more credit in google's eyes, i.e link to gambleaware (or any gambling authority site). In that case would an affiliate link to an authority site work? Or does that completely devalue it?
Any link out to an authority will help. Linking to an authoritative site naturally helps your post/article earn trust and/or authority.

    2. You say use ezine to find original article, with someone else's links having to be intact to publish to your site. If you do this are you saying you can still get valuable traffic to your site with content that is not your own, and links that are not your own?
My suggestion here is only if you are short on time. You will not draw a penalty unless republish is ALL you do. Why I suggest this (if you are short on time only) is that you can still earn links by having a well written, informative article, or excerpts from one (SE Land does it all the time).

    3. Article Spinning is surely a pet hate of google? Surely they can detect a spun article better than copyscape can? Unless this article software really does make it appear unique in google's eyes.
True until I started using The Best Spinner. I have used many 'auto spin' products and none are quite right. I manually spin and it takes 2 hrs to create a 500+ word 90% unique article. It also runs the content through copyscape automatically.

    4. If you outsource your article writing how do you know if its unique, if spun articles still pass copyscape tests?
I guess you wouldn't. I proof the articles (or my team does) to be sure they are well written and good reads. Article spinners can be used in safe ways, and for legitimate reasons, like inarticulate writers.

It depends on what works best for you.

Just like a web page I write the articles with H1 or H2 tags that include the keyword phrase and also include it in the first paragraph (usually the first or second sentence).

Real scrapers are pulling all of the content either way.

I also include an image that represents the keywords and use them for my title and alt attribute.
