Using .com domains in Germany
Hello,
What is the biggest reason why some affiliates create their websites with a .com domain instead of a .de domain?
Is this because of regulations in germany? or because they want to target more german speaking countries and not only DE? or both?
I think using a .de would be easier to rank in germany than a .com.
And what are the risk of using a .de domain and list unlicensed brands?
Let me know your experience and thoughts on this, i'm very curious
Cheers!

There seems to be some ranking advantage with a .de domain. However, you are allowed to list only gaming providers that have a valid German Gambling license. There are licenses now for Sportsbetting, Slots and Lotteries.
German Domain also has different privacy and transparency requirements than a .com domain

Excellent point to keep in mind for those considering using the top level.

What to choose? gTLD (Generic TLD) or ccTLD (Country Code TLD)?
Google categorize generic gTLD as neutral, which means their SERP is determined by their relevance to specific queries. Consequently, while gTLD websites can connect with a global audience more quickly, they also face strong competition in SEO.
In contrast, ccTLD are recognized by Google as being specific to a particular country or region. These domains tend to receive higher rankings when they align with the queries of geotargeted users. For example, if a user in Berlin searches for "Kaffee" on google.de, websites with a .de domain extension are likely to appear higher in the search results, thereby attracting more targeted traffic to those sites.

If you list unlicensed brands on a .de domain you risk getting a fine by the German authorities.
According to the German regulations that took effect in 2021 affiliates are only allowed to promote casinos with a German license.
So, I would strongly advise against listing unlicensed brands on a .de domain.
With a .de ending site-owners have more rules to follow. Missing imprints fx. can lead to a costly note from any lawyer.
