Your obviously doing something drastically wrong then, cause even on a freshly acquired domain, I can rank it on page one (1), even in the top three (3). If your trying to rank for 'casino' and such, yes your going to have a hard time without a bag full of cash.

However, here's a cryptic tip... A loaf of bread can be made up from lots of crumbs

This is pretty much it. Especially avoiding low quality links like directories, low quality article submission sites, blatant link exchanges, and getting posts on low quality blogs with spun, thin content.

In my opinion, guessing by force what Google will come up with does not make much sense. It is known that you need to adapt the pages to mobile and optimize their speed. Traditionally, there is content and links. However, the general trend I see in recent updates is the usefulness of the site. In my opinion, the behavior of users on the site will be much more important in some time. The time they spend on it, the depth of scrolling and the amount of interaction.

I agree--Google updates lately have seemed so much more aggressive and disruptive than those in the past. Heck, it is so pronounced that even searching the web as a user I notice how different the results are.

The SEO strategic most of it changed but is something you can easilly catch on online courses, but basically the main and most important thing to rank on google is one thing, "backlinks"!

    It's always relevant:
    1) a quality article with lsi keywords, the larger the better
    2) As many links to this article as possible.

I think that Google's policy, called Content Is King, is here to stay.

On top of that, it's important to design the site and contents to get the best information quickly.

A text-only site is not very favorable because it creates user abandonment.

I think Google will value pages that use images and tools to help users achieve their goals in a short amount of time.

quality content and keeping on top of the poisonous backlinks (seems to be very common now... most likely the big boys running negative seo campaigns against potential competition for keys) other than that just hard work and keep building

    The way I see it:

    1) Solid technical/on-page SEO foundation. Cannonicals are set up right, titles are written correctly, load speed decent, all that stuff.
    2) A fairly strong backlink profile to support the site, with mild on-going link building.
    3) Content content content. The longer the better.

Great answers so far. I still believe in great content and providing the best possible experience to the user for long term results. Short term - definitely aggressive link building.

SEO in 2020 its more team work to rank in competitive GEO's

    Like:

    1) On site

    - Good structure
    - Overall keywords distributions and no keywords cannibalisation
    - Quality content
    - Good inner linking
    - Speed, mobile + other technical stuff like correct href lang's, canonicals, etc.

    2) Links

    - Links from trusted web sites
    - Links, links, and links)

    3) Protection

    - Content scraping protection
    - Link spam protection
    - Behavior factors protection

    4) Brand

    - Brand search queries
    - Brand + main keyword search queries
    - Other (not organic) traffic to web site

Stop using the "current year" in titles to make it more relevant.

My personal view is that it goes more and more towards real content and less spammy backlinks. Backlinks are great, don't get me wrong here, but if you are getting no clicks on your links and it won't convert.. Doubt Google is a big fan of backlinks being put up for random use. If you're gonna do it, do it properly. I would give a penny for Googles thoughts.
