What do you call a person who wagers besides calling this person a gambler?
A bettor? I have a feeling that we use bettor for sports betting.
Sports betting --> bettor
Wager --> ??

Now seriously, I'd probably just use "player". It isn't exactly a synonym (not all players are gamblers), but it has a more neutral sounding and it should be universally understood in the context of gambling, otherwise you'd probably get away with "bettor".

Yes, but taking risks doesn't necessarily mean gambling.

Suppose you are designing a banner and you really don't want to use the word "gambler", so you'll go with "risk taker". Finally you come up with a slogan "New risk takers get $100 for free". I'd imagine a lot of people would get confused real quick, thinking you're hiring new stuntmen for $100. In that case neither "player" nor "risk taker" would do and you would still have to use either gambler, bettor or perhaps punter, if you want to sound fancy.

I'd stick to player.

From experience I tend to avoid using "gambler" since it tends to carry a negative connotation for some people.

Better and Punter sound nice too though.

I'd go with player personally, think it's likely to appeal to more people than maybe gambler or bettor, and I'm not sure if punter is used in America?

The word punter may refer to:

A British, Australian and Hiberno (Irish) English colloquial term for a paying guest or customer, especially a gambler, particularly an amateur betting on horse racing or a player in the game of Baccarat.

You should maybe define it a bit more, like: slot player, blackjack player etc. as the term player by itself could also refer to somebody "playing the field" if you know what I mean.
