    Default Good Image Optimizer

Anyone have a good, free place they go to optimize images. I have been using Yahoo Smushit but after I use it and recheck speed insights Google seems to think there is more than can be done for quite a few images. I dont know if Smushit is not optimizing the images to the fullest extent or if Google is just asking for to much. I think the first must be true, Smushit isnt doing everything it should.

So if anyone has a good resource they are using could you share?

    Thanks!

I agree about Smushit, bag of crap. i tried the WP Smushit plugin for Wordpress and it's rubbish, doesn't take much file size off the images and it slows down the upload process for images to the point of being painful. So I'm also on the lookout for a good plugin for Wordpress for image optimisation.

For images that were on my list from Google to optimize, about half of them come back as needing more size taken off after running them through Smush it.

Thanks but that is doing the same thing. It doesn't reduce the pic any further than smushit did and Google is still saying the image should be able to be reduced further in size.

Just out of curiosity, what type of file do you guys use for images? I have a lot of png images just because they always seem to look the best but I do know they are usually bigger. If you dont use png what do you prefer, jpg or gif?

And if anyone has another suggestion for a good mobile optimizer please let me know.

I usually use photoshop myself, and gif animator for the animated stuff....

I usually save static images in jpg and rarely use a png. I will use gif when an image has a transparent layer in though since a jpg doesn't support transparent.

If you are having an issue with a few specific images, maybe I can take a look for ya Travis...

    Hi there,

I usually get good results from a program called: Riot. http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/

It's free, fast and does a very good job optimising jpg, gif or png images.

That would be awesome Rick. Thanks. Even if I just sent you my header and a few other images that are used on every page I think that would help a lot.

I did find one optimizer that did the trick and got the images down to the size Google liked but then the quality of the image deteriorated drastically.

With smushit I normally disable the plugin (on WP) then reactivate it now and again to mass-smush all the images. Don't get too caught up in speed tests, you can spend hours for absolutely no benefit to users.

There is also an image optimizer located in the Google Speed test which will squash and give you a link to download the best version, the Google version may be better for SEO as its directly from Google as they release tools which provide results they want to see (usually).

I've found that .png can be smaller than optimized .jpg files at times. It seems that the more complex the image, the better it is to go jpg, but for a while I was converting everything to jpg per my IT guy and one day I realized that jpg conversion turned a 4kb png into a 20kb jpg, even with reduced quality.

With all that said, I use GIMP 2.0 to convert images.

You would need a better tool for this!

what i would recommend is just use a Software tool instead of downloading a plugin or going with those nasty online tools!
    Download : paint.NET

It's called paint.net it's not the url or anything. Once you have installed it put your image in there.
And just click Save As.. Select (jpeg or png) depends what you want to do with it. And than there's a Quality slider 0 - 100

Usually all images are 100 at first, I don't see quality decrease at all till 80.. between 70-80 only some colors, and sharpness is removed.. sometimes works well too (depends on the image) and lower than 70 i wouldnt go..

But just to give you heads up.
An image of 3Mb on 100.. that you slide down to around 75-80 has been resized to about 200-300kb.. !!!!!
(depends on width x height image)

    ^^ Sounds a lot like GIMP 2.0
