World Population Close to 7 Billion

The world population is getting close to 7 billion and have we got enough resources on this planet to maintain this? Had a quick look at http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html and the following population was given for the world as of at this minute;

Population: 6,895,578,676

To be this in contrast here is the world population for the last 40 years

1970 there were 3.7 billion
1980 there were 4.5 billion
1990 there were 5.3 billion
2000 there were 6.2 billion
today there are 6,895,578,676

So in the last 40 years the world has almost doubled in population. A lot of potential players here.

This reminds me of an episode from the Star Trek Original Series, but I don't remember which one (definitely season 3). There was this planet that was so full of people that there was simply no place, no room, no mountain or cave where you could be alone. The people were extremely healthy and just didn't die no matter what, and eventually start to look for a way to make themselves mortal so that they can finally have some peace.

Mankind is smart - this is why we have been the reigning species for aeons - and every problem has a solution. I for one would love to live on Mars

Wow, I cant believe it doubled in 40 years! To think that Costa Rica, where I live has only about 6 Million!

We are at a little less that 1.3 million here for an area of 2,040 sq km (788 sq miles). Plenty of space and resources still.

Taking into account third world countries like Africa, India and some countries in the Far East, it's a daily struggle for your average Jo/Jane just to get a meal in their stomaches let alone wagering online. In my mind it's a luxury which people from developing regions can ill-afford.

Population growth tends to be highest in third world countries as opposed to developed countries.

That's a fact. Unfortunately they are stuck into a vicious cycle. Little or no education (amongst other issues) makes it that third world countries have the highest population growth rate.

Hey Cass, since when is Africa a country?
Africa is a big continent with many countries, some quite successful and prosperous, stretching all the way from the northern hemisphere into the southern hemisphere.

It's getting to be like this now. I've gone camping umpteen times in remote parts of Canada and even when you think you're alone and there can't be anyone around for miles and miles, sure enough, someone will wander by or come and check you out. You can't really get away from people anymore. It's a real eye-opener if you try to.

Overpopulation is one of makinds biggest threats. Not only will we not be able to produce enough food. And imagine the enviromental challanges mother earth will face if if every person on earth should have the same living standards as people in developed countries. I think that says something on all of us and the rate we consume. Oh well, enough negative thinking from me for tonight, hehe.
