If there are any DMOZ editors that are reading this and would be willing to look over the submissions for errors please PM me.

Personally, I've seen new sites in the gambling related niches that just got listed about only having a site for a few months. It's who you know that matters, not what your site is like. (Unfortuntetely)

Im afraid I have to agree with Adrian.

Dmoz was once a great service - but it seems riddled with webmasters who have become editors abusing the system and using it to benefit themselves and certain other webmasters - similar like a pack.

I have seen some terrible sites listed in there - banner farms and all kinds of sites 2-3 months old - Yet established ethical webmasters from GPWA are excluded and not even given a chance.

    It really is not fair

Yep, DMOZ (especially with competitive niches) has to be one of the most corrupt sites out there.

There are multiple editors and many - call em super editors so to speak that overlook what the editors of the cats are doing A. They overwrite decisions made by editors all the time and can add or delete a listing if they don't feel it's appropriate B. I don't know what site your even talking about but if its anything like the majority of gambling sites, its likely affiliate heavy, meaning filled with ads and probably not very unique. C Reviews, deposit information is not unique.
    A. If they do not have a clue what those site are about or can not see a connection between listed sites, ask my nephew he can see what's is good and what isn't
    B. I see sites deleted and added but editors should not "own" a category but rotate with other editor's categories, non gambling related to prevent conflicts of interest.
    C. Most sites listed are gambling review sites.............

One should also look at the google directory ; have a look here :

    xxhttp://www.google.com/Top/Games/Gambling/Guides/
    and
    xxhttp://www.google.com/Top/Games/Gambling/Chats_and_Forums/

When comparing the last 2 pages you see urls listed TWICE and have a DMOZ listing.

Who edits these categories? Right !

It is not all that kosher there.

Kaus / Webscaz what do you think ?

Nothing is 100% perfect. If you don't like something report it, if you want to help apply to become an editor - other than that there's not much else to say really as it wouldn't make a difference.

I did however find this slightly amusing (so will share)

I have read that editors are accepting payment to get sites into the directory so sites with poor content are easily being accepted over sites that should get in. I reckon you could apply to be an editor and then get your site listed. It seems that it is easy to get into DMOZ if you know the right people as someone else mentioned.

I would advice people to submit their sites and if they do not get in then do not worry about it.

    Wow oh wow.

I've read the posts in this thread and I would like to point out a few facts about DMOZ and how it works.

    1) More than 200 editors can edit ANYWHERE in the directory.
    2) Editors with permissions in a higher category have permissions to edit in all sub categories.
    3) All edits are logged.
    4) All editors have to disclose all sites they are associated with, including those they mdoerate on or host. In my case I moderate at Casinomeister and host Affiliate Guard Dog and as such these are disclosed.

My site use to be listed but then an editor came in and moved my site to the "poker" category. Before that it was listed in the gambing guides category because it listed both poker sites and sportsbooks.

Short story long, because that editor moved it to poker it is no longer listed.
If your site primarily deals with poker then that is the category or a subcategory of where it should be listed. That is probably why it got moved from the Gambling/Guides category.

One should also look at the google directory ; have a look here :

    xxhttp://www.google.com/Top/Games/Gambling/Guides/
    and
    xxhttp://www.google.com/Top/Games/Gambling/Chats_and_Forums/

When comparing the last 2 pages you see urls listed TWICE and have a DMOZ listing.
If a site has an active casino related forum, then the forum in it's own right can be listed in Games/Gambling/Chats_and_Forums in addition to the main site being listed elsewhere within the directory. A good example of this is Casinomeister.

Dmoz was once a great service - but it seems riddled with webmasters who have become editors abusing the system and using it to benefit themselves and certain other webmasters - similar like a pack.
If you suspect editor abuse, as Kaus pointed out, please report it to DMOZ. ALL abuse reports are dealt with quickly by the meta and admin community of DMOZ. However please ensure you provide clear evidence of said abuse.

I have seen some terrible sites listed in there - banner farms and all kinds of sites 2-3 months old - Yet established ethical webmasters from GPWA are excluded and not even given a chance.
Please send either myself or indeed Michael Corfman who is also an editor at DMOZ examples of such sites. If any fall within the categories I have permissions to edit in, I will personally review said sites.

Failing that you can always utilise the facility at the Resource Zone.

If there are any DMOZ editors that are reading this and would be willing to look over the submissions for errors please PM me.
My PM facility is open here. Send me details and I will have a look.

Finally for those webmasters who still feel aggrieved at how DMOZ works, take a minute to look at my article concerning DMOZ.

    http://www.onlinecasinoreviewer.com/.../dmozvalue.htm

Furthermore if you want to help build the directory and make it a better resource, then apply to become an editor. I helped Michael with his application before he submitted it and will gladly go over anyones application should they wish to apply to become an editor. The gambling categories in particular could do with more proactive editors.

Point in case of the crap sites that are DMOZ listed... take a look at this mess of a site. The content makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever. I thought is was a Goog translator gone way off but the site is reg'd to someone in California.

    xxhttp://crankymommy.com/

    Here is one of the"posts":

Few years has an Cash Casino Free Gambling or internet they. Opinion u s the gambler. Victim to some bonuses require a 400%. Each post has 2 banners to some off the wall casino.

Now, tell me, how can this POS wannabe be DMOZ listed and NONE of my sites that offer valuable information be considered? I gave up submitting last year as I figured you had to know someone to get in. After seeing this mess of a site I firmly believe it. Even in my starting days I had a site 25x better than this drivel.

    Agreed!! Well Said.

So many terrible sites listed in DMOZ. I hope one day the re evaluate it. The site you listed was a joke.

how do you think they got listed? Give you 3 options.

    1. They paid an editor to list it
    2. The know an editor and it was done as a favor.
    3. They are an editor themselves.

What kind of quality is that?

IN all honestly - sites like that need to be reported and whatever editor listed that site removed from DMOZ and all his sites!

It clearly shows all the points above

And all the gambling posts! Yeah ok!

the site is listed in a journal/blog category.

    http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Online_Writ...ls/Personal/C/

The site (which at the time did follow the category it was entered in) stopped updating in 2007 - and likely was a dropped domain which resulted in it becoming a spam blog. Before you comment on why wasn't it removed - looks like they need a volunteer in that cat so maybe you can help out Or you can use the report link to let them know http://www.dmoz.org/public/abuse?cat...onal/C&lang=en

If you read Dave's posts he does give you some solid advice and I think Mr. C did the same a few months back. How about trying it before you condemn the editors?

Valid points Kaus but I just don't understand why none of my sites were considered. As far as volunteering, I do all my own work and have not the time or energy to be an asset.

There is a link on the resource zone to report such sites.

Please post such sites and the cat they are in here: http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/i...c=5420&st=4960

A Meta Editor or Editall who has permissions to edit anywhere in the directory will take care of it.

Myself, Kaus and Michael do not have directory wide permissions so are only able to take care of the categories we have permission to edit in. That site you listed Chips, does not fall in any of areas where we have permissions to edit.

The fact is, DMOZ needs more editors. If you are genuinely interested in helping, then apply to become one. You can therefore become part of the solution.

Chips, it is more likely an editor hasn't actually got round to reviewing your site.

Just to comment on that - Chips consider how many people want a dmoz listing, then multiple that for gambling affiliates. I only get a handful of submissions - I can't even imagine how many sites are submitted daily to any of the gambling categories. The # of submissions could work out to be a part time job for a volunteer editor.

Three years enough time? I submitted way back in 2007 if memory serves. Other sites requested in 08. I quite fooling with it in 09. Not going to loose sleep over it. Just feel I have a high quality, informative websites that do warrant submission in the directory.

    Appreciate the input folks.

Most know full well how dmoz works!

    1) Become an editor.
    2) List your own sites.
    3) List your pals sites.
    4) Link back and forth between said sites.
    5) Hell even link back to the dmoz cat to give it PR juice as well.
    6) Keep as many competitors as possible out of the picture.
    7) Set back and reap the benefits.

... and NO not all dmoz editors do this, but the ones who do stick out like a sore thumb!
