    Default Dmoz

There have been several discussions on here and other forums concerning dmoz and how to get your site listed there.

I have written an article, part based on a post I wrote on another forum recently, as a result of my own experience as an editor on what is required for a site to be eligible for listing within DMOZ.

The information I provide is already accessible on a number of sites, in particular DMOZ itself, but I thought I would write down my own guidelines, to help webmasters understand what is required of a site to be deemed listable at DMOZ.

Please note, I will refuse to answer any queries either publically on the forums or privately concerning individual sites and their status.

I hope you find the article useful.

Are you currently an editor? If so which category?

Your article does little but rehash all the beseeching dmoz editors have bestowed upon the unworthy for years.

It wont take much time to do, but you're right it will be wasted time.

Well they can't have every site up there.

There are categories that need updating. I submitted 6 sites yesterday, of which none were my mine, none for gambling.

I think that the proliferation of the WWW has resulted in DMOZ to be more restrictive than ever, and that was certainly inevitable. I think content is key, and DMOZ does not want to litter itself with thin, affiliate-based websites. Kudos to DMOZ.

I stumbled upon a few sites that are DMOZ listed with only 4-5 pages of content.

There are even some that are nothing but a long list of casino affiliate links, but I reckon the sites are worthy of being listed - specially if they are one of your bestest pals.

I haven't looked a whole lot further than the first few, reviewing site design / linking strategies / affiliate links etc, its clear that there is a lot of connections going on in this cat too.

Please correct me if am wrong but isn't DMOZ a tad outdated for this decade. I mean does anyone really pay attention to them anymore. I actually forgot they still existed.

    Just a thought

From the dmoz blog .... "DMOZ data is consumed by thousands of search engines and websites in over 80 languages, from Google to smaller, special interest websites."

Do you know how many backlinks a listing in dmoz will generate? Make no doubt about it, a listing in dmoz will boost your traffic and it will boost your google rankings.

Whats really sick is a lot of these guys have sites listed in nearly every gambling category. I guess unless your part of their close-knit network your SOL, least until the BIG G starts devaluing links. If you happen to be pals with an editor and become an editor yourself, you can give your site(s) listings and even deep links in different cats and get by with it. You can list all your pals POS sites and get by with it - no ifs ands or buts, dmoz is fraudulent cesspool.

Maybe Ill go do another study on the fraud and post some linkbait of my own.

Strange you mention this exactly what I been told quite some time ago by my mentor. So in reality the article site matters but not so much as who you know. I figured as much my moral principles would not support such a concept. I believe the merit of the site or article should outweigh a free door pass into DMOZ.

Explains why I wrote them off a long time ago as did my mentor. As he states DMOZ is the “Free Masons club of the web”. A okay with me gives us good competition and were doing just fine without them.

Oh yes, the majority still can get by, but if the playing field was level these guys who are gaming that system wouldn't be doing as well as they are, which might give at least some in that majority a chance at doing better.

the point is that dmoz is still being used by a bunch of directories and search sites, so an entry there brings you automatically up in a lot of sites. But it is not the power like some years ago.

I remember a few years back webmasters were lining up to have their sites listed on DMOZ. It was considered almost a essential. Nowadays I rarely hear anything like it was.

Now I am curious whether or not a few of my sites would get approved. One has very rich informative content with no advertising. The other deals with cyber crime again very informative with no advertising. If these sites get rejected I will be convinced DMOZ is no longer an viable directory.

I will report back on this in few months.

Thats what everyone who isn't listed would like to think, but looking at the results its clear its still as big as it ever was.

Some of these guys who game the system have their site listed in more than one category. I challenge you to go run a few different kw searches in google for sites listed in the gambling cats and see sites come up in the top 5 for some pretty darned good kws.

I have no doubt that if their site(s) weren't in dmoz they would be lucky to be on page 5 for those kws.

If you need some examples feel free to PM me and I will direct you to data exposing a few of these opportunist.

I have many sites with different niches. I submit each site on the right category. However non of those sites i submit pass pass on DMOZ. I really can't figure out how they run their sites and they almost reject my entry.

Yes I do not not even worry with them anymore. My site use to be listed but then an editor came in and moved my site to the "poker" category. Before that it was listed in the gambing guides category because it listed both poker sites and sportsbooks.

Short story long, because that editor moved it to poker it is no longer listed. Not a snowballs chance in hell of getting listed in there I think. I resubmitted back to the category I was in and no response now. Out of curiousioty I just looked and webzcas (the starter of this post) must have been the editor in question. Thanks buddy!

Most def not true. I know a few that were removed and it didn't have a major effect on the rankings (page 1 btw) at all because their link profile is diverse. Dmoz isn't the only link out there (but I still think its a good link to have)

@UPB - I think you comment to Web is wrong. There are multiple editors and many - call em super editors so to speak that overlook what the editors of the cats are doing. They overwrite decisions made by editors all the time and can add or delete a listing if they don't feel it's appropriate. I don't know what site your even talking about but if its anything like the majority of gambling sites, its likely affiliate heavy, meaning filled with ads and probably not very unique. Reviews, deposit information is not unique.
