PageRank is a complicated thing that takes a lot of time and patience to increase. There's a pretty cool article at http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html about some of the secrets behind pagerank.

Like everything at Google, it really comes down to a formula. The one listed at this article is:

a page's PageRank = 0.15 + 0.85 * (a "share" of the PageRank of every page that links to it) "share" = the linking page's PageRank divided by the number of outbound links on the page.

It's really key to make sure the sites linking to you have strong value-Google has gotten smarter. It's not the number of links, it's the content. Google likes 5 links from sites with PR4 or PR5 more than 200 links from sites with PR1 or PR2.

The article I attached takes a couple of reads to really understand (or partially understand). PR is really a mathematic equation, and to understand it, you've got to grasp some of the basic formulas.

One other great thing to get you thinking in terms of SEO is to have the google tool bar on your browser, and make a habit of looking at how Google is ranking the sites your visiting. Maybe take a few minutes and ask yourself-why are they ranking the way they are?

Hope that helps-I know if was a bit lengthy. Feel free to email or DM me if you would like some more sources/info.

    Hey KingGambler,
I used to be concerned with page rank. Actually, you could say I was obsessed with page rank at one time. Now, I don't even look at it anymore. It is not the cause of your SERP ranking, but a loose effect of some links google credits as linking to you.

Focus on the conversions. I have a site that gets 10-20 highly targeted visitors a day. This site has good revenue and is only PR1.

Yes, I greatly agree with you. Besides, Page Rank is invisible and very negligible to regular users who do not have their Google Toolbar installed in their browser, especially for IE users. And PR plays just a very little part in affecting your search engine keyword rankings, and the fact that only Google use it means that PR is not a factor when it comes to other search engines. However, if you really want to increase your PR, then all you have to do is to gather as much do-follow backlinks as possible, but without going to the extent of spamming every site just to increase the chance of gaining do-follow backlinks.

I also think there is no point in trying to optimize the google PR. In my opinion it is more productive to find out, using tools like google webmaster Tools, google analytics, statscounter, those search arguments which deliver SERP values between 11 and 100, and then to optimize there the contents, keyword denisty etc. to bring the Serp between 1 and 10. I have made some good experience using this method. However, it takes time.

I have to agree with the people saying ignore toolbar page rank, for starters it is out of date as soon as the update is done

First off you have to realise that google only updates PR ranking 3 or 4 times a year!

And if you have a MASSIVE increase in incoming links very quickly Google will think you are a spammer and penalise you. You have no choice but to learn to be patient!

If you have ever wondered whether worrying about PR is a worthwhile investment of time, this site apparently is PR2. It has a sitewide footer link from one other site (PR3) and only one page with a single image.

The PR figures quoted above are based on a PR checker tool because I haven't bothered since late 2005 with knowing the PR of my sites and it's just that an alert came in today for one site which caused me to poke around a bit more.

While I agree that one shouldn't focus on PR, be aware that the # of pages google will crawl and index on your site is related to your PR.

The larger the site, the more important it is to maintain a decent PR, however if good content breeds likability, then you will gain rank as your site grows anyway.

out of interest you can see how many pages from your site G has indexed via webmaster tools b/c the site: operator on G is inaccurate.

Personally I am very interested to see what PR I get on some new sites, but it's completely irrelevant for my new/young site.

    It's quite the complicated process.

You see since you have a page rank of 1, you will need EXACTLY 7 x PR4 links, 8 x PR3 links and 3.5 PR2 to achieve a well balance PR3.

If you wish to jump to a 4, well that my friend would require (again exactly) 18 x PR4, 4.75 x PR5 and one notable PR6 in addition to the numbers above.

If it sounds more complicated than it's worth its cause it is...look for quality links...not to increase your little magic toolbar but to increase how well your site is crawled, how well your site does in the serps' and just the overall benefit.

    The page rank debate continues!

Some information is accurate some is not. I won't bother to refute or agree with anything posted on this thread.

I can however convey my own experience.

If you want some page rank on your site you firstly don't need inbound links from other sites with high page rank.

Your first steps should be structuring your sites pages and navigation in a logical manner and linking to each page logically also.

I have done this with hundreds of sites without any external promotion and have never once failed in getting at least a page rank 2.

Joining as many forums as possible and using a sig link is NOT the best avanue....and not even recommended to do in that manner.

Joining forums that match the NICHE is ok, and by all means a sig link is ok there, but if you look at the person who posted above, his sig link has NOTHING to do with gambling, or being a webmaster, so although he will get a back link here, it will not mean much since this is a gambling forum for online gambling and webmasters not geared for boutiques or other electronic sales.

Not sure why i am responding to a spammer but Google does not own page rank to my knowledge, they license it from Stamford University until 2011

Maybe one of the reasons why page rank has not been updated for so long

I think PR updates have ever taken place and sites have benefited from them, last year in feb i registered a domain xxhttp://www.hotwomen.org.uk/ and its PR 3 from last 4-5 months, so if someone says google have not updated PR in 9 months then wont believe that, as everybody can see from this example.

But thats right we should concentrate on building links and website ranking instead of bothering about the PR.

Google Page Rank is mostly depends on the backlinks,To increase it you have to take care of following things.

    1) Go for the Forum will give you the backlinks.
    2) submit for search Engine directory.
    3) create the Articles.
    4) Get Links from the related websites.

Page Rank is determined also on the age of domain and onsite work. Some sites do automatically get a PR of 1 - 3 if they are aged domains.
