    Default Help regarding moving (hosting)

Posted this thread a couple of months ago about moving my hosting and you guys provided great help, as always.
    https://www.gpwa.org/forum/hosting-g...te-225698.html

My current hosting expires on March 10 so it`s time to move, I always take care of things in the last second, a big weakness of mine.

My question: Is there anything I should know about migrating? Particularly as it involves databases.

I will most likely choose a Vidahost Cpanel hosting package and they do offer help migrating - "sit back and we`ll do it". However, I`d like to ask you as well if there is anything I need to know. For some reason I am a complete idiot when it comes to the server side, it`s like my brain can`t understand how things work in this area.

I own a couple of domains which I need to move, but my main website (wordpress) has sql databases, created by me, full of tables and content - which I CAN NOT afford to lose. Being a novice in this area, I`m a bit scared about moving.

Obviously a few solid backups are needed as far as the databases. Be sure to get full database dumps/exports using something like mysql administrator/php myadmin or similar utility.

You probably already know this but just in case, the dump file is more or less a straight text file that will list all the tables and content etc.

If you end up renaming the database name on the new server, you can edit the dump file manually with a text editor, the dbname is only defined in one or two statements at the beginning.

Depending on what security plugins you use, you can consider disabling them, or at least setting the admin login back to default just before the move/backup process. This can help rule out problems with the admin login and can help host tech's work through setup issues if needed.

The main files you will need to edit for the move are the wp-config.php file as that file lists the database name as well as the location of the database server (either by ip, hostname, or fully qualified domain name)

If the new host is helpin you move the databases, the main thing I would think you would likely want to do is grab a set of each backups for yourself as well as ftp backups of the each folder, more for peace of mind than anything.

If you do use a plugin to rename the admin login and the host is doing the move for you, ask them if they are comfortable with that plugin or if they suggest setting back to default until after the move.

If you do come across a problem it will most likely be dns related, also dont forget to flush the cache of your site.. but do expect some bugs for 24-48 hours.. you would be best migrating before cut off day then that way if your old ip is served visitors still see your site

Yep, I am trying to do it today. I have to admit I have no idea what "flush website cash" means and can`t find info on this. Help?

its not so hard to migrade, backup ur data and upload via ftp . the only thing is that you might encounter are problems with your joomla/wordpress databases ... this depends on each hosting cause they have different versions of sql even so if you know a bit of sql u can edit those lines in editors like notepad++ and voilla ..... but anyway even if u encounter these kind of problems thats nothing major that you should worry about ... all good to go if you have a safe bkb ...

PS: don't forget to backup ur sql lol ...

I moved one of my WP sites to new Cpanel hosting step by step, by watching this video.
I am sure it will help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBsD48nUO4w.

Anyone has any thoughts on changing IP with an entire PBN? Could not be good right or does it not matter?

cpanel to cpanel is dead easy. Your new host will be able to do it for you, just provide them with your old login details and they will perform a backup of the old host and restore it on the new one.

Yep, after talking to Vidahost, this is exactly how it will work. They said they will present me with a preview of the carbon copy they make to see if everything works fine, so there shouldn`t be any problems.

Current hosting performs daily backups, I did database dumps just in case. As a novice on the server side, I was scared for my databases, but I`m comfortable now and don`t expect any problems.

Thank you all for your inputs, very helpful, as always. Cheers!

I would just make sure all my web pages are saved to my computer. If anything happens, just upload them.

Final followup: Everything went fine, now I`m just waiting for the name servers to propagate. Took a bit longer than expected, but both new host Vidahost and old Romanian host edomenii did a good job, so I can definitely recommend them if anybody will ever be interesting in moving.

My experience with cpanel back ups provided by hosting companies is they often have gaps in them, the latest copy they have that can be restored is often a few days old. Always worth backing up a Wordpress Site (at least the database) on a daily basis. Plenty of automated plugins about that can do this.

If you log in to cpanel and perform the database backup manually, there should never be an instance that the db is days old.

I agree though that for those a little less tech saavy that there are a handful of plugins that can help pull db backups.

The problem is many hosting companies claim to keep daily back-ups, this gives the impression to a website owner that they don't have to worry about backing up, as the host has it covered. I learnt the hard way that these host generated automated cpanel back-ups aren't always up-to-date.

Another thing to watch with Wordpress and back-ups is don't get them out of sync. I updated Wordpress, ran into a problem, rolled back to an older MYSQL back up and got into a real mess as the functions and some code had changed. Had to re-install previous wordpress version etc. Horrible!

My main scare was with my own database tables which include a tipster competition and all sorts of stats. Wordpress DB is easier to back up. I did database dumps, but I was never sure what`s the right way to do it with all the options in phpMyAdmin. Anyway, it all worked out great.

Old hosting edomenii.ro DOES keep daily up to date backups, so I asked for migration only after I made sure database is up to date, no problems here. I also previously tested a migration, as Vidahost offers this option, to make sure everything works fine (initially didn`t, but it was sorted out quick).

However, I had to stop posting new content in the last 2 days, in order to keep things "up to date".

PS: Just realized that before recommending edomenii.ro (who usually do a great job), I should have mentioned that they ****** up my organic traffic for 3 months a couple of years ago, due to an outdated cpanel version. I even suspected the problem back then, but they aggressively said "it`s not us". A HUGE minus.

My current hosting expires on March 10 so it`s time to move
    Why?
Why not renew or even upgrade your plan?
Migrating is not impossible, but it is a pain.
And you are correct that the most tricky thing is the database.
