While going through some competitor backlinks I saw lots of links placed on different abandoned blogs, where the comment section is already several thousand spam posts. On a statistical side, these links might look quite nice, for example 40+DR, 300+ referring domains and traffic as well. But is there any actual value to such links given these blogs are now only used to span backlinks?

Targeting competitor links is always good, as long as they are good links themselves.

Try and avoid link farms or spammy sites.

Focus more on targeting sites with Traffic as apposed to DA, but also still consider DA.

If you can be bothered, maybe look at good seed sites that refer the domain you want to post on.

And many more little avenues that you can go down.

Forum links themselves do NOT carry a lot of value, and links from any website that has been abandoned, have even less value, and links that are not on topic also have little value.

Using such strategies, may or may not do more harm to your site then good.

I did indeed read a post on Yoast blog recently about the actual harm, that these links form abandoned blogs may potentially cause. I did utilize that at some point, but will stay away from it now.

The classic press release blasts with thin content days are gone.

However, press releases with legit news stations, or smaller news stations that have affiliations with bigger corps still hold their weight.

Backlinks are good.

Some PR posts can cost 20K. What you get is a small package 1-2 guests posts and 5 other relevant backlinks on lesser sites.
These packages are commonly found on bloomberg news and Forbes.

Spending your resources on links and guest posts and not on your actual site product, content and site design is a mistake.

Back to buying links, if you do buy links:

Aim for higher DR's ranking sites, use multiple tools Ahrefs is one.
Aim for placements in category or subject relevance on authoritative sites.
If you have the budget use an agency.

At first everything should look naturally.
To buy links from bloomberg news and Forbes to a young site is not a good idea.

I look for a handful of backlinks, DA20+ and dofollow links website with good traffic. Although as of 2020, google is interested to see how many people are talking about you and not so much into if the link is dofollow or nofollow. One more important thing is Google notices how many referral websites you have as well.
and yes, in-depth competitors backlinking is a great start.

I block as spammers all those who email me this kind of way.

This is why many old timers encourage dealing directly with site owners.

My favourite link building strategy is building a relationship with website owners on Twitter, takes a lot of time + effort but pays off in the long run. Have built up a network of 20+ sites that allow me to post content.
