Default So, how is the list determined anyway?

Hearing arkyt's call for more detail, I'm happy to share how the list is put together each month.

When the monthly recognition initially began in July 2006 we intended it to be a measure of overall contribution, but primarily considered one factor -- total number of posts. It was done based on having a cutoff number of posts, with everyone above that number included. In order to keep the list at roughly the same number of people each month (around 20), the post count cutoff grew slightly over time as the forum became more active. In exceptional cases additional people were added to the list who might not otherwise have made a cutoff because of service they provided to the community, such as moderators and volunteers for the membership review team whose contributions were not easily measured in post count because they involved behind the scenes legwork. We also added people to the list who were below the cutoff in cases where they'd made really stellar contributions with a lot of information, a kind of manual adjustment intended to differentiate between the one-liner messages compared with essays.

As the community continued to grow, we switched to a similar method but realized we had many more people we wanted to thank and recognize because there were many more people actively involved. Based on this we switched from a post number cutoff to a cutoff based on the number of people recognized -- including the 30 most active members.

One of the other consequences of the growing community was the in-depth contributions that used to be easy for me to think back to and review were happening more and more -- they were showing up enough that I couldn't recall them in an easy, consistent way at the end of each month. Based on this we changed to a metric that seemed to approximate some of the differentiation in depth of the comments, which was to account for post length rather than purely post count. The current method is to rank all the people who posted in a given month in order on two criteria: total posts, and total post character count (i.e. post length). The ranked position each person received is then combined, with the total post rank counted at twice the weight of the length rank. For example, with a webmaster who posted the second-highest number of posts, and the fifth-highest total character count, there would be a post rank of 2 and a length rank of 5. This would then weigh out as 2x2 + 5, for a weighted total of 9. The lowest possible weighted total would be 3 (1st for total posts x 2, and 1st for length). The list is then sorted by weighted total, and like golf or tax rates, the person with the lowest number wins.

And throughout the time there has been a few exclusions or changes to the list. The most significant is that it recognizes members who we know to be webmasters at the time the list is produced. This is verified by reviewing the person's member profile and seeing if we have any portals listed for them -- we gather these from the forum signatures and messages from members letting us know which sites are theirs. This sometimes leads to mistakes because we don't always know a person's sites. For example, CasinoJack was left off the list even though he was an active affiliate a few months ago, and arkyt you were left off from this because we didn't have any sites listed for you. I see from your signature that you have active portals -- I've had those added to your member profile and had Michael add you to the list in the spot that your activity ranks you.

The second exclusion is that we do not include staff members on the list. GPWA Nancy would top the list every month with all the messages she posts about private member applicants, and you might also end up seeing Michael thank himself if we included staff, which I'd get a smile from but might look a little strange.

The final exclusion has been regarding the top spot. The top of the list was initially planned to be non-repeating, meaning if someone had been at the top, it was always open for others in future months. This is the reason why some of the announcements indicate "the top poster" and others indicate "one of the top posters". After a year with this non-repeating approach, we decided to allow repeats in the top spot if the prior top recognition had been at least one year prior. That time period was reduced a second time, with the current "hey, let others claim the glory" waiting period being six months.
