    Default Silo-ing

    Greatings,

I have a question for the old timers here with some knowledge and experience, please.
I am restructuring my site and planning a new one. I want to make sure I understand the silo-ing effect perfectly before I start.

The part that I have trouble understanding is when you have a whole category of similar types of pages such as "reviews" or free games for example.

Normally a page should have a DIFFERENT from all the other pages and this name should be a keyword phrase that has been researched. But what if the pages are all reviews or free games?

Let me use an example with "casino reviews" I will have a link on my home page with the key word phrase I have chosen... "Online Casino Reviews" that goes to the Online Casino Reviews page that has this tittle and keyword phrase in meta. Good silo-ing means that you want to place your links to the individual casino reviews on this landing page. This is the page I want to be #1 for in Google for "Onlne Casino Reviews".
My question is weather I should continue with this phrase in the tittle of the casino reviews that follow? For example should they be "Gocasino Online Casino Reviews" or can it be simple "Gocasino Review". So will using the exact same terminology (except for the "Gocasino") help the Online Casino Reviews landing page with SERPs? or will it dilute the page.

Unique names I would think are not really important for casino review pages themseves. Because a player punching in Google for a casino review of Go casino (for an example)has most likely been to the casino already. So what is the point in trying to make a review page rank????? agree???? But a Page for Online Casino Reviews is an important page because this is a player that wants to register and spend money, once he has seen a few reviews.

    Thank you in advance

    Nice thinking there.

As far as my understanding is concern, Siloing is a term used to describe a scenario where in a page only gives out a link to highly related pages. Thus, siloing is only observed on linking, not with what the title and metas of the page being linked from.

For example, if a page is about online casino, it should only be linked to pages talking about 'online casino'. Thus the keyword should not be absent in the anchored link. Such links like 'online casino reviews', 'online casino benefits', 'online casino payments', 'online casino bonuses', 'reputable online casino' etc. would be contributing a lot to this. On the flip side, linking to 'gambling guide', 'online betting', 'top casinos', etc. would devoid siloing.

As with the example stated, the possible link out you can possibly take should always include 'online casino reviews' in the anchor text. Thus 'Gocasino Online Casino Reviews', '888 Online Casino Reviews', 'Rushmore Online Casino Reviews', and so on. Altering the sequence of the base keyword would devoid siloing on the page - 'Gocasino Casino Reviews', 'Gocasino Reviews', etc.

    Hope that helps.

    Default silo-ing and keyword coordination

Ok then... you got it and now I do too. THANK YOU BestHands. Let me see if we can get a bit deeper.

When the GoCaisnoOnline Casino Review has deeper page like a "Terms and Condition" page I have been setting up the tittles like this "GoCasino Online Casino Reviews Terms & Conditions" It's a bit long but that would follow your lead as to what silo-ing is all about... Correct?

    KeyWord Phrase Coordinating

My understanding of good SEO practices regarding meta-tittle, meta-keywords and meta-description is that the researched keyword-phrase ( ei. "Online Casino Reviews") should go in the tittle (which in this example is the entire tittle of the landing page), it should be defined as your meta keyword/phrase (i know some people don't believe meta keywords are nec.) and included in the description, which will show up in the SERP. (so to me the descript. is important for that reason alone). So what would be the optimal SEO practice for defining the keywords for the child and grand child posts? Would it be the same key word phrase "GoCasino Online Casino Reviews" or the original researched phrase "Online Casino Reviews"? Would you not want to use the same keyword for your children as the parent "Online Casino Reviews". Would good practice be to have several different keywords or keyword phrases for the meta keyword, even though you have not placed them in the tittle anchor text etc?

And I would think it good to have your keywords listed along side your page in your notes because when you are writing an artical for distribution you would want to have the exact same keywords defined with the article distribution site for the anchor text you use for that particular post. So I think defining the keyword is important not only for the meta but for other ways you might want to push your page up in the SERPs as time goes on.. And I would think it is wasted work to have too many "semi-random" keywords defined because you could dilute other pages that are truly focused on that keyword.

I forgot to include on my statement above that if you have no excuse but to link to necessary pages like terms and conditions, policy, or disclosure, you can use rel="nofollow" on them to preserve siloing on the page. Hope this solves the above question.

If you have some time, please visit OnlineCasinoSpecialist.com and check on the meta declarations I've set on each page. You would find that I never really observed siloing on each page, but mainly helping crawlers to better understand my pages through areas where I can extend keyword hints while never losing a chance to optimize (keyword rich and readable) the title and meta descriptions as I understand they are the main factors for conversions when the site already hit first page on a very competitive query.

First highlight: it would be to declare keywords that greatly help identify the page. ex. bingo page - I titled it 'Online Bingo Game Guide' since that is what the page is all about while on the meta keywords, I declared online bingo, bingo game, bingo guide, tips - keywords that help crawlers categorize the page on the index.

Second highlight: Yes. you can observe this with what I did with the bingo page we have. Meta keyword is another way of telling crawlers what the page is all about. Thus, one of the ways to relay page keyword hints to them. Please note that keywords declared on meta keyword are not necessarily the keywords you target for the page, but are words that contribute a lot to crawling agents' reading and understanding ability.

Third highlight: It is indeed important to define keywords. And it is also true that it is not only with meta tags that you can do it. You might want to spend time reading the search engine ranking factors compiled and rated by SEOmoz - http://www.seomoz.org/article/search...anking-factors

Default META: tittle-keyword phrase, keywords-permiations of tittle

I went to your bingo page and saw what you di with the met keyword declaration. You took your tittle and made 3 sets of keywords with the words in the tittle. I like that a lot. Would you not want to add one more keyword phrase ... your title in it's entirety.

For example when I researched "casino reviews" I found "Online Casino Reviews" to be a popular term with less competition. So I used it for my page tittle. It is a very good key phrase in its entirety. I would image a key word phrase in its entirety is a good page title, Better than " Online Casino Reviews of the Best Casinos" (for example)
What I will do is have these key words defined in meta
Online Casino Reviews, Online Casinos, Casino Reviews

You have basically answered my question and I feel good about receiving advice from you. I am trying to get the concept of tittles, related keywords along with siloing ingrained and well understood from all view points. That is what learning a trade is all about... making fine details of the work part of your being. I am looking forward to reading the link you sent me at SEOmoz.

    Thanks

    Default Siloing

    Hey,

Anchor text is important, and Best Hands has covered that nicely, but I think link structure and the use of context to surround key links from your homepage, and globally throughout your site, are important too.

Also, consider the use of underfold on the homepage to link to important pages that are deeper in the site linking structure. That way they too get the homepage link juice. For example: home > online casino review > 888 online casino review > 888 casino bonus exclusive and you wanted the last page to perform in Google for this time limited (or permanent) bonus, then with the underfold link from the homepage you could give it immediate priority. Otherwise it could take weeks to cache and you could miss out on traffic while the search term is hot. To that end, any deeper page you want to give permanent prominence to would benefit from this system and bypass any rigid linking structure all sites have. Looking at your website (and it looks very good, btw) you have plenty of space to do this in.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

    Cheers,

I get plenty of visitors who have used the name of a casino as a search argument. I used to wonder why does someone visit an affiliate if he already knows the casino site?
I have learnt that many look for reviews of a casino they know because the casino website does not provide enough or clear information on the casino. So they come to a review after visiting the casino website.

Absolutely correct. I too go to a lot of effort searching websites for info on a casino. But my point is that once they have clicked on the casino 1st, then affiliates get no commission. If the cookie is there the game is over. Please tell me I am wrong!!

    Yes Arron,

That helps, I see it perfectly. Many thanks for the clearly laid out concept/structure. It was well spoken.
So here is a good question... Perhaps a "XXX Casino Up-date" post/article on the home page would cover that, if the only link is buried on the XXX Casino Review page?. Do you know enough about systems to know if in fact a post showing on the front home page Via a WP Plug-in would carry Google over to index the "XXX Casino Up-date" post/article post?

I am solely into NetEnt casinos for the Non-USA casinos. Jackpot looks inviting.

I visited your site and I used some of the meta contents I found on your homepage like online casino, online casinos, online casino games, online casino reviews etc. for a google search, but I did not find your site on page#1, apart from in case of 'Online Casino Specialist'. So what are the search arguments which you attract by using the above meta declarations?

Nandakishore I like your graphics on your new site SEO Tips For Me And You. You must have an opinion about the above question. Is it affiliate program specific or do ALL affiliate programs know if a visitor has been there before and will not give you a commission if they return from my portal and sign up???

Arron you are an affiliate manager. You could answer this...... I thought this was solid, given knowledge. Please confirm.

    Default Meta Keywords Used

I think I never failed to include a note that's directly connected to this question. Please see below just in case you missed to read the line.

Basically, since meta keyword is one of the areas where crawlers are looking at, it is ideal to take advantage of it by declaration related and surrounding keywords that are, at the same time, helping further identify the page. As it is really hard to rank for online casino when crawlers read and understand your page as 'casino consulting', or 'casino business'.

Moreover, our site is basically new and we're still battling to rank for those keywords. And homepage is the generic page of the site where, IMO, general terms should be declared as meta keywords. If you go a page deeper, you would notice that most of these keywords are assigned a dedicated page except for 'online casino' and 'online casinos' which where we intend to rank our homepage.
