World Cup 2014 - Affiliate progress report, how you dong so far?

I thought I'd create a post about the world cup and how you're doing so far this month.

4 and a bit days in, my progress report reads, tons of signups, BUT more or less every account in negative so far this month. It seems like early results have gone the obvious way and people are winning a lot of their bets. Hoping for things to change!

Same here, was thinking of making a similar post. No real shock results yet (apart from maybe Uruguay) and all the big names are scoring as well.

I can only confirm that it is the same here. Many signups and deposits but only small revenue.

I'm making money despite actually having a tips site, and I'm making something on the side by betting over 2.5 on every game. The bookies have adapted by now to a high-scoring tournament but I enjoyed it while it lasted. I might go for under 2.5 now. A game of cat and mouse, and the mouse is winning.

However I must note that all my earnings are coming from people who signed up much earlier, I didn't get a single new guy who'd sign up, deposit and then bet on the World Cup. They're probably too busy actually following the tournament on TV and on media sites.

This is my first world cup, its going great so far.

Lots of sign ups and FTD's, all the offers seem to be winning at the moment though, and like others im on a minus with nearly all bookies.

The results are good so far. The traffic increased a lot and there are also a lot of sign ups and deposits. As some of you already mentioned the revenue is not that high but I expect some good numbers during the next weeks. Good luck to you all guys!

Since the week leading up to it until now, had around 25-30 depositing players with one single bookie, gave them a real push, at the expense of others.

The bookie in question uses netrefer, so most of you that use it will have seen the 'customer reporting' field, where you can set it to 'display revenue per customer that signed up from date1 to date2" etc. Set that to last week until today and... All 30 or so FTD's have won / i'm in the negative for every individual player

So far seems like every day has been slightly better than a decent saturday (in terms of signups), so happy with that. Revenue hasn't been fantastic, but probably to be expected with the easier to predict games.

Your numbers are probably negative because of the signup bonus / free bet / special offer. You do know you're paying for these, I presume.

The "Brazil to wear yellow" was a marketing masterpiece by Coral. It seems like a sure bet that can't be missed but is actually a tiny signup bonus

Only a masterstroke if people lose their winnings though! We've had most ever Coral SUs but well down for the month but expecting things to pick up like everyone else. Could be nice to wipe that balance and then have some losing outright bets make july profitable...fingers crossed.

In general, Coral's marketing approach to this tournament is not to measure success against the net rev figure between the 12th June and 13th July.

We are most focussed on rapidly growing the base of football punters in advance of the new Premier League season, where I would expect us to take a similarly aggressive approach to kick start things there.

The response; thanks to affiliates like you, has been a massive and I mean MASSIVE spike in affiliate-driven sign ups, even compared to our optimistic projections. I am confident the tactic will pay off if we play the long game.

My theory is that once you're in the Betfair sportsbook you probably don't play for long before being marketed (and convinced to move to) the exchange product (as a player once you're comfortable with exchanges you'll probably not go back to a sportsbook as you get better value). You don't get lifetime rev share eon exchange, instead a sliding scale over 5 years http://affiliates.betfair.com/page.aspx?l=1&p=21

Not great when you actually get a referral that they'll probably end up on another product which pays you even less.

It's difficult to judge and take a large enough sample size, unless you have accounts with 200+ active players per bookie like we do whether the bookies have taken a hammering on the World Cup so far. Certainly draws pay money, and there's only been 1 of those so far and a predictable one in Iran v Nigeria!

In our opinion the bookies are using the World Cup as an acquisition period instead of a big revenue generating one.

Also this may be a reflection of how competitive sports betting is now. Some bookies are working on very small margins and most have to follow the best odds and try match them. This then leads to bookies giving odds like above evens on Germany to beat Portugal, so people double their money. Some of the odds this World Cup have been very generous, like 1/3 on Brazil in their first two games. They're even offering 1/8 on Argentina to beat Iran. It should be more like 1/20 given a win will see Argentina qualify.

Also, we're only looking at 3 games per day, so betting volumes may be lower than your average English Premiership weekend.

In summary, the punters are probably winning at the moment, but there will be a lot of tournament long bets that may pay out in July,

Yep my experience with Betfair has been that they are a waste of time. I don't want my customers going anywhere near exchanges, as you say once you get into exchanges you rarely go back to sportsbooks. I have barely made anything on the customers I have sent to Betfair.

Usually not significantly bigger than your average busy weekend of season football. Same with things like the Champions League final - it's 1 game.

Another thing to consider is the timing of games. On the World Cup you've got 3 games staggered over the whole evening. As people go off to watch the game the traffic drops right off. However when 90% of betting on a game can be in play these days then having football all evening can be a bonus.

One thing about tournaments like the World Cup though - they attract new customers and customers who don't normally bet, so as an acquisition period it's a good thing. You've just got to hope those players get attracted by the pre-season marketing and come back to play in August.

gonna repeat what betfair said to me, they want people playing the sportsbook and then the successful winning player they encourage them to use the exchange. makes sense to me. no point shifting their losing players from sportsbook to exchange
